Does anyone have tips for getting rid of thrush in breastfed baby. Health visitor just came for a visit and reckons he is showing signs of thrush.
Thanks

Ive only ever known it to go away with prescribed medicine from GP. x

I got nystatin for bub and some cream for me. Had to register baby with the Dr first and then get appt for prescription. Have to put cream on after every feed but wipe it off before I feed him. Guess I can just use baby wipe to wipe cream off - thinking middle of the night with bathroom downstairs. I hope it doesn't last long!

I was told you don't have to wipe the cream off before you feed. Most of it is absorbed by the time the next feed comes round. Hopefully you have caught it early so it should clear up quickly. x

HV has just diagnosed me and baby with this. Waiting on gp ringing me back to get a prescription. My breasts are so painful, will this get better once thrush clears? How long does it take? X

I have this and lo has nappy rash as a result. apparently it's a bit of a bugger to get rid of. am on nystatin and daktocort for me but been on this for a week and still not completely gone. have been applying cream and washing before and after b feeding. am really keen to kick this so any tips would be great!

Im on clotrimazole cream and lo having nystatin. Coming up to day 3 of treatment and not seen any improvement as of yet. Really hope its not going to be a long term problem as its causing us both a bit of distress atm. Ive read that taking Acidophilous is meant to help so might try that if i can get my hands on some x

Coming into this late but you need a week's worth of nystatin for baby and thrush cream for your nips, it does disappear after 5 days but the yeast isn't gone and it will come back if only treated for 5 days.

Ive had 10 days of treatment with no improvement so far. LOs tounge is still white and i still have red, painful nips. We do have terrible shallow latch so this isn't helping x

How's everyone's healing coming along?
My lactation consultant thinks I have nipple thrush but luckily the LO's mouth shows no symptoms so far. I've started to apply daktarin cream to my nipples. Hopefully the soreness will go away soon because it's really putting me off breastfeeding to the point that I even considered quitting yesterday :-(

In my case things are compounded by the fact that my period came back (only 6 weeks postpartum, what bad luck!!!), round about he same time that the nipples became red raw sore. Plus I got swollen and lumpy breasts. Apparently sore nipples are common when your period comes during breastfeeding. So I'm not sure it is thrush after all.

What's it is, I hope it goes away soon :-/

Oh i totally sympathise with you. Ive been having a total nightmare for the last couple of weeks. Been on treatment for thrush but with no improvement. Saw a LC today who thought it could all be down to bad attachment and not thrush at all. Babies tongue is very white which could be milk stain apparently but ive noticed what i think it white patches on her back gums (very hard to see and know for sure!) So going to get swabs taken tomorrow to find out one way or another.

My nipples are very red and painful. Been taking paracetamol as needed but only takes the edge off and im never painfree. Been shown some latch improvements today and that has reduced pain slightly so I'm hoping (and praying) we are on the road to painfree feeding.

Can you arrange to get swabs taken? Maybe look on bfn guidelines about thrush. My LC printed these off for me today to take to gp as they never prescribe the correct treatment apparently. Hope it gets better for you soon xx

Sounds like you're having a rough time too. Let's try to stick it out together. For me it would be a shame to throw in the towel after so many weeks of hard work and perseverance with this breastfeeding malarkey. For me it just seems to be one thing after another.

I'm seeing my gyne next week anyway, so I will ask about the thrush and swabs maybe , although pediatrician checked baby's mouth thoroughly a couple days ago and concluded no signs of thrush.

Not nice.

Yes we will get through this! I have felt like quitting so many times. I sometimes feel like everything would be easier if we switched to ff but im sure that would also come with its own set of challenges.

For me i just keep setting myself little goals like i will keep going until my appointment next week. Then after that im usually feeling a bit more positive and set myself a new challenge. Its the only way ive survived the last couple of weeks.

Keep me posted on how you get on. Hope the daktarin works for you. Have they given you something for you LOs mouth anyway just to prevent you passing it on? Xx

Just been to see my gyne and he has confirmed thrush but also possible Raynauds syndrome. So he's given me some drugs to help with those. And to continue breastfeeding despite the pain. That, added to the early return of my period, and according to him none of these things are "textbook" post pregnancy. Great! That's encouraging!!

Like you, I've felt like giving up and switch to ff. but then I know I'd be devastated not having tried all the options to give my baby what's best for him.

And I thought bf was the most natural option. Ha! Natural may be but easy!??! No way.

Oh, and yea, the lactation consultant also suggested daktarin cream for the baby's mouth but then the pediatrician said it wasn't necessary as he has now symptoms, so keep it just in case but preferably not to give him medicine if he doesn't need it. We'll see. Fingers crossed he doesn't get it. I'll be taking diflucan orally for 2 weeks so that should clear it. A small portion of that will get to the baby via Breast milk and that should also aid in case it's transferrd to him. Plus he takes probiotics orally which also protects against thrush.

I'll see how things go. Good luck to you all too!! Keep us posted.

Fellow sufferers: as well as sore nipples, do you also have very hot nipple area and areola?
Also, any tips to relieve the pain? I dread feeding my baby cos of the pain :-(

Sorpresa I haven't noticed my nipples being particularly hot just very very red. As for pain relief I have just been taking paracetamol when it gets really bad. Can you try and take some half an hour before baby feeds? I know they dont always feed at a predictable time so might be quite difficult but worth a try. Also ive not done it personally but i think cold compress after feed is also supposed to help. Sending you hugs as I know its awful :(

We had our swabs taken today so waiting to get the results back. I'll be really suprised if they come back negative for thrush but good to know either way. When they come back positive hopefully dr will prescibe me the tablets to take as gel/ cream not working xx

Also just a thought but have you got a good latch? Was feeding painfree beforehand?

Im working on our latch and its really helping with pain during feeds xx

Well, we've had a rocky start and after a lot of perseverance and tears, we have managed a fairly OK latch. Pain had gone already at about 4 weeks but then it started again probably from the thrush and the fact that my periods have resumed (rubbish :-()

I must say, after one day of treatment with the drugs and a 4 days applying the cream, things seem to be getting better marginally. Fingers crossed I'm not just imagining it.

Let us know what the awab results say. Even though it's not nice, hopefully they confirm thrush and you can get the meds for a quick recovery. My gyne said that the cream alone usually doesn't resolve hence you need the high dose diflucan.

Good luck!
