i've noticed over the past few days ella doesnt tend to react to you when you're talking, she's done it for quite a while, but i didnt pay much attention thinking it was just cos it was noisy in the room and stuf, but i've been noticing it more and more. her newborn hearing test was fine, and the HV did tests ringing a bell next to her and stuff when she was about 6 weeks and she turned to the sounds of it just sometime between then and now she's stopped doing it. she used to always react to my voice, and i did a thing with HV where she was holding her and talking to her and then got me to talk at the same time and she'd turn to me, so she defo knew my voice. but now if i say her name she doesnt turn to me, or even acknowledge she's heard anything :(

i mentioned it to my mum before and she was like dont be silly, and started shouting her across the room. but she did nothing. i was sat next to her with her slightly to the side of me and i was saying her name and stuff, but she just sat there. we got out a maraca aswell and were shaking it to gt her to turn her head, but she just didnt bat an eyelid. even got my phone playing music and turned it on right next to her ear...nothing. she did jump when katie did a proper loud, high pitched scream, but aside from that, she's shown no indication that she can hear anything. she likes it if you talk to her face to face ad she talks back, but i dunno if its just facial expressions she's smiling at.

is it possible for hearing to be ok at birth and then just go?? i'm taking her to the docs on monday, am so worried tho!

I'd get her checked obviously but I would say this...Hebe is EXACTLY the same at times. She rarely responds to her name.....try not to worry too much chick.

see my sister was like it, and she used to shout all the time, so my mum had her checked out - hours and hours of tests at the hospital and they finally came upw ith their diagnosis... selective hearing

Like Lisa said I'd get it checked as well, has she got a cold or anything?

Try not to worry though, if you knew how many times I've thought this with ALL of my kids  I was utterly convinced Joe was deaf and he failed all his tests so I was even more convinced. He didn't pass them until he was 1

He can hear the grass growing as they say

Both mine have been exactly the same at times, and Sam's hearing is definitely fine when he wants it to be...all you need to do is whisper the word biscuit at the other end of the house and he's there

I think they get to a stage where they're far more interested in looking at what's around them than listening to what's going on, so they do tend to ignore you - definitely get her checked out if you're worried but I think they all do this x

i think she might be teething, dont know if that would have an effect? tonnes of dribbling, hand munching, red cheeks, all that business. so maybe its related?

One of mine went temporarily deaf (not deaf they just couldn't hear) due to congestion :D She was 7 months, hearing test done a week later and she was fine :)

could be an ear infection or a build up of wax perhaps. Try not to worry until you have spoke to the quack. Remember that things are fascinating to a baby and if she is focused on something else when your talking to her she might not hear you or notice the sounds around her. xx

Now then....Toon reminded me of something. When OH was little they thought he was deaf in one ear. Long story short they did all sorts of tests then found his ear was completely blocked with wax. His ears just produce lots of it so they'd bunged up completely. Could be something that simple. :)

ooo i have really waxy ears could be that!! theyre right mingin mine, i think i'm gona try candelling mine cos i cant hear very well myself atm

My son morgan is like this, he has been to the hospital many time's for tests but he is fine:) it started a while ago and i thought god he cant hear me:shock: but nooooo it was just him not wanting to listen:shakehead:. I do it alot with my oH some days lol! but i think you are right to the go the doc. He may send her off for a check, Hope all go's well hun. x

I'd def go to the doctors. My daughter went through a 'selective hearing' stage where I proper panicked about it! Now if she responds with 'what' I pause before repeating myself and 9 times out of 10 she's heard me. It's harder with teeny ones though! Hope she's ok hun

I would get it checked out to be on the safe side, they will refer her for hearing tests till they are happy.
Harder to get proper results when little. We were refered to a hospital with my youngest when she was age 2 ish and then due to her age and understanding the tests , it took them several tests to decide she needed gromits fitted via a tiny OP. If they need gromits, then the colds can make it worse and the ear canal does not clear itself, hence the hearing issues.

She did and they can fall out really quickly as the ear canal grows, so you go for regular tests / checkups. Hers stayed put for over 2 years and really made a hige difference to her picking up of words / learning. She never needed them again, and is great now!

Hope your daughter is ok, but there is help there if needed.

thanks JJ mum! i told her dad about it this morning that i was worried, and he was like, look at her she's so alert there's nothiing wrong with her! i was like, erm, its not alertness i'm bothered about!! his advice was not to take her to the doctors cos they'll only come up with something that she doesnt have :wall:

Rosie totally ignores me at times - usually when she is engrossed in something. Hope it turns out ok xx

I would get her checked hun but like everyone else has already said I wouldnt worry, Dec ignores me all the time and has done since he was little, if I call him he will ignore me completely unless he feels like answering. xx

to be fair, when Im home and my Mum shouts up the stairs for the 5th time I pretend I havent heard so that she will come up instead of me going down. :oooo:

seriously though, get it checked out, and hope she's just fine  xxx

mini update:

took her to the docs this morning and she's referring her to the paediatric audiology department to have it checked, she said at this age there werent any tests that she could do, so the best thing was just to refer her. initially she told me to speak to my HV and get her to refer her, cos thats the way it had to be done!! she was dead nice tho when i told her about what had happened and said she'd try and do it herself!

was fun and games getting in, all the doors are just wide enough for a double buggy, would have had to have cut katie's foot off to get in  had to have someone push ella whilst i carried katie and we got to sit right outside the doctors door til it was time to go in, then got someone to help us back out again!!

bloomin heck, thats no good, its supposed to be a doctors surgery!!

Glad she's getting a referral. let us know how it goes x
