my boobs are in agony. ive got a crack on one and im pretty sure im getting one on the other too.

im using nipple shields atm, as he had alot of problems latching at first, and they got him on the breast, now im using them for pain lol.

im using that lanshinoh cream, and have cabbage patch tits.

is there anything else i can do?

how long will this last for?

its so painful atm. i really hope it doesnt last long :(

Im in agony as well.... not with nipples though they are fine,

we can suffer together...

Can you ask your mw to check positioning? sounds like you are doing all the right stuff, it wont last forever, how about taking paracetamol? ?Hope it feels better soon

i had the midwifes trying to latch him at the begining, and he wouldnt latch. now with the shells, he will happily spend all day on the breast. the m/w yesterday saw him feeding, and she didnt say h was latched on wrongly.

im dosed up on diclofenic and paracetomol for my lady bits, so that would help for my boobs too i think,

I ended up getting a really painful nipple initially from bad positioning. However once the positioning was sorted it just got more and more painful as it never got a chance to heal. What I did was expressed that breast and then fed her the expressed milk every time I was going to use that breast. I did that fro 48hrs and that was enough to let it heal. Thankfully I was able to use the other breast normally.

I ended up with blood blisters on both nipples because he sucked so hard, I was really close to giving up but I'm so glad I didn't. Keep at it, it will get easier and it so worth it!

I found the Avent nipple cream worked best for me. Good luck

You might find a rugby hold takes pressure off of the sorest area of your nipple - your midwife will be able to show you how to make sure you hold him properly supported for this. It will get better, it just takes a bit of time. I was in agony when breastfeeding Ella (it used to make me cry!) but after a few weeks there was no pain at all. TBH nipple shields didn't help me too much, but that might just be me.

This website has loads of useful breastfeeding advice www.kellymom.com - here is some info on latching and positioning
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/start/basics ... urces.html

Hope things start improving for you soon, I know it's hard but it will be worth it in the end :)

 hi hun,

yes like kina said the rugby hold is v good it helped me loads, she latched on better to. my nipples where very sore too and blead i tried shields too and they heald but when i stoped using them they got sore again so i ditched them, i know it is really painfull without but your nipples will get used to it wont hurt it took me about 6weeks i know it sounds aaaaaaaaages if your in agony but it is well worth it. lanshinoh cream was good for me, and also a bit of expressed/leaking milk rubbed on helped. when it was really bad i sat with them out   just to let air to them (not if i had guests tho wasnt that brave ) xx

Is there no way you can feed without the nipple shield? I saw a lady the other day whos nipples were getting mishaped from badly fitting nipple shields so I know sometimes they do more harm than good. Having said that I do know that they can be a great help when used correctly......

If you are getting cracks then this does usually indicate a problem with latch so I would persevere with making sure it is right every time... I know this is hard but it is so worth it. Also let your nipples air every day with some breast milk on them....

Have you been checked over for thrush? If your nipples are pinky and sore you may have it and this can lead to cracking....

An excellent position for feeding with sore nipples is lying down... the baby is in a different position and so the sore bits don't get "rubbed" as much (saying that if you have a correct latch they shouldn't be rubbed at all) My baby has never latched properly though so I know how hard this can be.

Just wanted to say  . I can't comment on bf really as I gave up after a week, just coudn't carry on, but my advice is ask for help. Your MW should have access to a BF advisor, ask about this.

thanks for the advice :)

i did try a small feed without the shield last night. i know i have to do away with them, and i was thinking the same, that it might hurt more once i remove them when i think my nipples are better.

i swear sometimes he uses his gums too. it really does feel like it lol.

i am going to perservere, as i had to give him a bottle a few days after i had him, as he hadnt fed all day, and the m/w couldnt get him to latch on, this broke me abit, i really didnt want to do it.

i look foward to the day when i dont dread the next feed.

Aw I know exactly how you feel! I think Austin was about 3 weeks before I really started enjoying breastfeeding. You're doing so well though! It does get better, and it's so worth it  just keep at it

thanks hun. i really hope it isnt long. ive had enough of pain now.

no one told me that labour was only the start of the pain

I know just how you feel............ I had exactly the same problem with my LO.

I was in so much pain that I nearly gave up a dozen times......... I began to dread feeds and often ended up in tears ..............BUT the girls on here kept encouraging me to carry on and I am so glad that I did.

I ended up using the cream for 3-4 weeks and it really helped.

Sometimes it is just shear perseverance that gets you through but it is so worth while. I love feeding Grace and am so glad I kept going.........
Once we both learnt how to do things properly (it is new for both mum and baby and takes some practise) it has been magical......... the bonding wigth baby is wonderful not to mention not having to sterilize bottles etc

sending lots of

its still really hurting :( i sometimes think he isnt latched on propperly, so i take him off and try again.

its so hard. i didnt imagine it to be this hard. i so hope the pain passes soon :(

Have you seen a breastfeeding counsellor? Someone should be able to look & tell you if the latch isn't right. Have you tried feeding lying down or with the rugby ball hold?

I certainly remember curling my toes every time he latched on for a good few weeks, and crying sometimes just before and during feeds because of the pain. I nearly gave up twice but I'm so glad I wouldn't.

You've done so well going for nearly 2 weeks, just set yourself a goal - try to get to 2 weeks, then 3 weeks etc, before you know it you'll be enjoying it.

Don't have any formula in the house if you can help it, or it may seem like the easy option one night and you're less likely to carry on. Good luck honey YOU'RE DOING SO WELL!!!
