Ok, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using these and if they were worth the money? I'm assuming the more you spend the fancier they are so i'm looking at renting one so it doesn't break the bank...don't want to be paying much more than £30 though.

Anyone have any recommendations of certain makes?

Thanks!! :-) Xx

Will be stalking this thread to see the answers you get Tasha! lol

Umm not sure on makes, but my midwife gave me leaflets for 2 local companies, and they were about £22 for 6 weeks hire.

Could be worth asking your midwife and see if they know any good companies :) xx

I bought an Obi Tens from babycare tens, (same people that make the mamatens)http://www.babycaretens.com/index.php .
I got mine from ebay and a friend gave me some of her spare electrode pads. I've been using it for a few weeks now to cope with the spd pain and have really found it helps, and I haven't been taking as many painkillers when I'm using it.
I paid £20 for mine and it was in perfect condition. Definately a good investment for me!

i rented my tens from birthease.com, they have 2 types i think but i wanted one with a boost button, think the other one never had it.
for 6 weeks hire i paid about £24 and they send you the packaging to send it back. I got mine the other week and its not due back until 20th August. i got it 2 days after ordering it aswell which is useful so i can start practicing with it soon!! :)

I have never used one before but everyone i know who has had children and been able to use one has said it was great.
One of my friends got to 8cm using this alone which made her stay at home longer which i am hoping for so i am more comfortable so for me it seems well worth the try. :)

they should have a dildo add-on option
then i would definatly buy one ;)

well... you'd get a good few years more use out of it wouldnt you! and the OH wouldnt be able to complain

hmmm, i think i see a niche in the market :D

just a reminder that you need to make sure the TENS machine you get is suitable to use for pregnancy as some are not apparently!!!

I used the Elle TENS machine with my second baby and I really rated it. Well worth £30. I got it from Amazon I think....It got me through some pretty wicked early contractions for a good few hours. :)

oh god sorry didnt see that bit :(

hi hun i bought the labour tens machine from lloyds pharmacy it cost me £30 and was really worth the money. I started using it as soon as i got niggles after my waters had broke and couldn't of got through labour without it, i dilated really quickly and only took it off to get in the birthing pool. I have to say the boost button felt great to use when having a painful contraction. Really really would recommend tens! Xxx

I'm not sure why they are so insistant that normal tens machines are def not for use in pregnancy or labour. There are two differences between a normal and maternity tens though. First is the mat tens has a boost feature to help deal with contractions. Second is the mat tens has four big electrode pads rather than two to help deliver the tens to the right areas.

Most of the mat tens will also say not for use during pregnancy and there is a bit of a debate on whether or not using it earlier in pregnancy will bring on early labour. I know someone who's obstetric phsyio gave them one at 35 weeks. I asked my GP who said if they did bring on early labour then everyone would use them rather than membrane sweeps and inductions. I've been using mine for quite a few weeks now :)
