are thay any good and worth buying?

renting seems just as costly especially if you go over due.
so buying seems better then sell it on later .
but i would like to know if thay work and help with the pain at all?
have you used one? did it work? and would you recommend one.?
saw one advertised in boots where else can you get one? and is there anywhere that sell them at a resonable price.?

thanks

No, I dont think they work at all. I had a home/birthing pool birth and I found it annoying more than anything else, I prefered to wander around. When the contractions properly start they are worse, I have been told some find them helpful. Good luck

I had a home water birth and LOVED my tens machine, which I used as pain relief, nothing else, until I got in the pool at 5cms dilated.

I would really recommend one. Its only about £22 to hire for six weeks which is much chepaer than buying.

Have a read of this thread too.

Hi,

I used a tens machine during my labour and I thought it was fantastic. They have a boost button on them which changes the rhythm of the pulses when you are having a contraction and it really helped me. I think I would have needed more pain relief if I had not used the tens machine as I don't think I would have managed the contractions for so long as my labour was 50hours long and the tens was used for approx 25 hours. You do still feel pain but it really does help to take the edge off it.

I rented my tens machine from the internet. It was £25.95 for 4 weeks and you could have a week extension for free. They don't send them until you are 37 weeks pregnant though so even if you did go over due then you would only have 1 week to pay extra which is £5 and thats only if they let you go 2 weeks over due. I think renting isn't expensive but its personal choice as you said you can sell a tens if you buy one.

Some people do say they don't work as you still feel the pain but thats beacuse they expect it to take the entire pain away not realising you will still have pain but tens will just help to take the edge off it. I tested what it was like with and without the TENS, when the contractions were painful I turned off the TENS for the next one and it was terrible, needless to say I instantly turned back on the TENS, experiment over...lol.

Can't recommend highly enough.

If you have an advantage card, Boots are giving you 1000 points when you buy a tens machine online, 500 points if you spend over £50 and free delivery. You can return the items to a store or with the free return stcker thing if you change your mind.

I got the Elle tens machine plus 2 spare sets of electrodes (1 to practise with, one for OH's sister who is pregnant too) for £80 and I got 1900 points - so that will get me £19 worth of baby stuff instore :D And so worked out cheaper than anywhere else.

Everyones experiences will be different, they work for some and not for others.

Personally for me, it was FANTASTIC!!!!

I will be buying one at the ready for my next labour. I was planning on renting one with my first so still hadn't sorted it out when my waters broke early at 34 weeks. Fortunately for me, the hospital had a spare one and I used it from the start right until late on in my labour.

Our hospital rented them out as well, it was only something like £15/20 to rent it from the hospital.

I would definitely give it a try, don't rule out any kind of pain relief, you don't know what will work for you until you're in labour and give it a go.

I thought my TENS was fantastic for the early pains. I used it for about 26 hours upto about 5cm.

I had the setting on about 3/4 but kept on accidentally knocking it to 10 :rotfl: I laugh about it now but at the time I was

I also kept forgetting to take it off the booster setting once a contraction was over so when the next one came it wasnt as effective :wall:

Hi Sarah,

I just booked my tens machine, im hiring one from www.Mama-Tens.co.uk

I bought a voucher pack from my local chemist they are on special offer at £6.95. I received a voucher with a number explaining how I book, so I called them & booked it. It was really easy. It is to be delivered at 37 weeks and if I go over I receive 2 weeks extension free.

The normal price of this on the web is £27.95, so I figured that if it doesnt work then I have inly lost £6.95.

If you want to get one then I will gladly get one for you from my chemist and you can send me payment through paypal. I will then PM all the details of the voucher number etc so you can book it straight away and I will also post the voucher out to you so you have the receipt and the actual voucher.

Let me know if you are interested, PM me if you want me to buy one for you.

having just been through this I can honestly say THEY ARE BLOODY FAB :cheer: :cheer:

Not sure if they really work in a 'medical' sense but they are a great distraction! I used mine for about 12 hours, then when i got to about 8cm and things were hotting up it began to irritate me and i took it off. The midwife looking after me said this was common. I got to the end with just some gas and air.
i would certainly hire one again next time.
