hi every1,

I dont know how effective they are, just to say we are hiring one from the hospital for £15 (+£15 deposit), we collect 2 weeks before DD (thats next tues for me) and we just leave it with the hospital once the baby is delivered. If I go overdue and have it for longer I dont have to pay extra.

I used one and didnt think it was working until i took it off. It seems to take the edge off it slightly.

I used one last time around and definitely felt it helped me, if only for the fact that it was me controlling the intensity of it and gave me something to concentrate on. Was only useful for the first stage of labour though. Would recommend it for sure. Unfortunately I don't know where to get one from over here this time around :(

i used one first time round and am again, i think it helps even if its only a mental thing, it just sort of evens the pain around your body. I did feel like i still had it on for the 2 days after tho!

i hired of natures gate first time and bought one this time. boots also rent.

I was going to buy one but decided not to after feeling what it was like in my antenatal class, i didnt like the numb sensation it gave you and thought it would just annoy me when i was in labour.
When i got to the hospital (when i was in labour) before i got gas and air the midwife gave me some codeine and a tens machine, but it didnt work (the gas and air however were marvellous). So if i had bought/hired one it would have been a waste of money as the hospital gave me a loan of one for free.

Maybe you should ask the hospital if they have their own supply of them? the only problem with that would be if the labour ward is really busy when you go in then they may not have one free.

hope that helps :D

thanks every1. i think i am going to try one as i am going on maternity ward so they nly offer pethidine and gas and air and i didnt really like any of these the first time round so would prefer to try something else during first stages. for those who are also thinking of using one, some ladies on another site have recommended tens.co.uk to me. they have a choice of 5 machines and send them a few weeks before your due date. they are quite reasonable and also you dont have to pay until your machine is dispatched so i can order mine now and not have to pay for a few weeks. going to have a look at boots as well tho.

thanks for your advice ladies.

I used one last time round and o be honest not sure if it did anythig but it still nice knowing it was there. Going to to rent one this time round i think. HOWEVER I have a word of warning!!!!! I asked my OH to take mine off - because I had progressed in labour and had forgotten it was still on - and instead of turning it off, he turned it up just as it sent through a pulse!! Which in effect meant that I had a big shock!! If that wasn't bad enough, he did it again!!! It was actually really funny thinking back (although he felt awful) and I think it may have contributed to my quick labour :rotfl:

I have hired one from a ocmpany called Natures Gate. Is £26 for 6 weeks, not much to lose if it doesn't work and a bargain if it does!
