Temperature - What do you class as high?

What do you class as a high temp in your baby/toddler? After stripping baby, keeping cool, sponging down etc at what stage would you use calpol to bring the temperature down? What is normal range?

What temperature would you expect for a teething baby if this is one of their symptoms?

NHS Direct says

Normal body temperature ranges between 36-36.8C (96.8-98.2F). If your child’s temperature is over 38°C or 100.4°F then they have a fever (high temperature). They may also have a fever if they are flushed, hot and sweaty.

I can't be much help to be honest as I just use the booklet that's in my baby thermometer as a guide to what's normal or not. Teething makes temp go up but I never paid attention to how much, he certainly didn't feel too hot that I thought he was ill.. what's her temperature reading? And are you always using the same ear to test it cos sometimes the 2 ears have different temperatures... Anywhere 39 or 40 should be a call the doctor situation, but if it's 37 or 38 if it were me I'd keep an eye on it and see if it cools down. Check at the same time that she doesn't drop in temperature too quickly cos that can also be dangerous x

Shes had high temp on and off for almost 2 weeks, it goes from normal (around 37) and has reached 39.6 a couple of times but on average its usually around 38.6 (we check both ears & take the highest as the reading)... we've been to doctors several times and they arent too worried and im to take her back on weds if its still high.

Ive been giving calpol if its over 38 and other methods havent worked but thats been alot over the past couple of weeks which im not really happy about. I just wondered when other people tend to give capol? Am i doing right giving it her, doc has told me to as we need to keep temp under control. People on here seem to frown on giving calpol, makes me feel guilty although i know she needs.

Well how sad am I but I wondered just what "normal" was for Lucy so I took her temperature one day when she was perfectly fine. (It was 36.4 btw)

In my opinion anything over 38c is high and I would be concerned if it was happening frequently. It implies that there's some underlying infection somewhere.

I know people say that a baby's temp can be high for teething but I don't think it should be that high.

Try ibuprofen as that has worked for us better than calpol for keep temp down longer and getting it down quicker but I think you should ask your doc for some investigations.

I had a bad weekend like that where Lucy's temp kept rocketing and then coming down with medication and in the end we found out it was a urine infection. There are very few symptoms with urine infections in children, all Lucy did was go off her food, have a high temp and drink lots. She showed no signs of being in pain or discomfort.

The fact its going on so long would say you def need to get it checked out.

I hope I haven't worried you but its better to be safe. Insist that your doc do a test on her urine.

Thanks Becky, she saw GP on thursday just gone & they arent concerned as shes a bit snuffly & think its that so we gotta go back this week if its still high. I did ask could it be teething but GP said it was too high for teething.

We are using ibruprofen too when its really high & calpol doesnt bring it down Thanks

Only just checked back I wasn't being ignorant honestly

Take her back to GP if it carries on but just wanted to say don't feel bad about giving Calpol - I did it once a night for a couple of weeks as it was the only way he would sleep while he was teething. Yeah that sounds bad, but he's fine so I stand by my decision. x

My thermometers beep and flash red if over 37.5, but I would say you have to go with what your lo's usual temp is if you know what I mean.

Adam usually reads about 36.4, so for him I would say a temp was anything at or above 37.4.

Panic would set in if he reached 38 +, and call NHS at 38.5 +

I'm still a panicky mum, but who cares. xxx

It was 39.1 this morning and has now come down to 38.4 with calpol & nurofen, defo gunna go back to doctors tomorrow as im not happy about it being constantly high.

it depends on how they cope with the temp really. luke has had a temp of 38 before and not suffered but then he can be grizzly with a temp of 37.8 and i would give him calpol or probably ibuprofen first as he responds better to ibuprofen for pain and temps i have found.

i try not to rely on figures and readings and just go on how i think luke is in himself as we all know our children and know when they are not right. if you are in any doubt bout your child get them checked out, give yourself peace of mind. i spent so many times worrying when sometimes a simple trip to the drs could hopefully reassure you, xx

.our little boy suffers from high temp with everything. a little cold or a tooth coming through and his temp shoots up. we are so used to it now i dont panic when he feels hot. i use calprofen which works great. tepid baths and stripping down to nappy helps too. we quite often put mark to bed in just a vest, you can always pop another blanket over him if he feels cool later on. we took him to hospital once when he was 39.5 and it was a total waste of time all they did was give him calpol!!! to be honest im the same and have always suffered from high temps too. one of the first signs im coming down with something is that my temp shoots up so i think mark just gets it from me. if your gp thinks everything is ok then dont worry to much. hope this helps and gives you a different view to other mams who are not used to hot babies.
