Hi, I've just read in a pregnnacy book that you should stop drinking caffeine when you are pregnant. Before I got pg I drank about 5-10 cups a day. I have since cut down so I only allow myself one cup of normal tea a day (in the morning) but I also drink loads of decaf tea (although it doesn't taste quite the same) and decaf coffee. Is it safe for me to still drink tea? Some books say cut out altoghther whereas others say you are allowed a maximum. Being the swot I am I even phoned up Tesco to find out the caffeine content of their teas. I hope I'm not being too anal about it all, I just want to have a cuppa each day without worrying that I'm damaging hte LO.

you can have 3-4 cups of normal tea/coffee a day with out any probs and you can have unlimited de-caf!

Enjoy!

There is actually no proven harm to your baby with caffeine consumption.

However, there still are limits and Jennywren is correct, they are pretty high, but if you do drink the max tea remember this reflects on how much coke, chocolate etc you can consume.

Enjoy your tea..I love it but really dries up my mouth at the mo

Really? I heard there was a link between caffeine during pregnancy and cot death. I guess it must have just been scaremongering.

me to, ive just had a cup and had to finish it off with 2 tic tacs to re-water my mouth lol

I got typhoo defac as well to try and it tastes pretty much like normal tea to me mate so you could try that

i have to say i havent paid much attention to all the restrictions that they impose on us pregnant woman, altho i do have to say drinking 6 pints of normal coke in 3 hours makes baby hyperactive hahaha

Be careful with the coke, I'm not sure how true it is, but I have heard that it can leach calcium out of the bloodstream, leaving little for you and baby.

As I say, it may not be true, but it might be worth checking with your midwife if you drink it a lot.

Im sitting here with a cuppa in front of me right now :D

Its fine to have it but just not as much as usual..well for me i can have the same as usual cause i usually have none or 1 cup a day ...

You will be told not to have many more things in time to come...do what you feel is right and dont let people tell you what to and not to do ... I havnt touched swordfish and things like that because they have a high merc count..but i have had mussels and i still have my steak medium rare...(however in tgi fridays that seems to mean medium well done)

Cas xx

The way i look at it too, is take the information but judge for yourself what you think is right to follow and what is ott.

Our grandparents didn't have all of these things to avoid and our parents didn't have such strict guidelines...(I'm amazed how much has changed since my last pg 8 years ago!) ..and we're all here and well :D

on my last pregnancy we found out that drinking coffee made my blood pressure higher so this time round im on decaf tea and coffee the pg tips decaf is lovely tastes the same as normal :D xxx

I can't stand the smell of tea or coffee now...I guess moderation in everything
