Hi everyone.

My LB has been formula fed since birth. Started out really well on C&G ready to feed but once his intake went up we had to switch to powder because it was just getting so expensive. This was at 2 weeks. He got extremely constipated and was prescribed Lactulose which didn't really help and HV advised we try the C&G Comfort milk. This improved the consistency but made him ever so windy and his poop was dark green which I expected but he was still getting bunged up quite often, at least once a week and he was in ever so much discomfort. We have also tried Aptamil which was no better but I've since found out that these are pretty much the same. Myself and OH were really bad according to our parents on SMA so haven't bothered with that. He is now 10 weeks old and after a very disturbing scream at 5am 2 days ago where he was that constipated I decided to go back to the Ready to Feed formula as that is the only time he had what I would consider normal poop. I was right and within 3 feeds he had done a normal poop, not green, normal consistency and for the last 2 days he has been like a new boy....apart from still popping off alot but not in pain with it.

So now I'm in abit of a pickle because although I am pleased it has worked and he is happier it is going to be soooooo expensive if I just feed him ready made formula. Do you think it would be okay to introduce some bottles of powdered formula, say 1 a day and then up to so I am alternating between the 2 so as to bring the cost down? I'm hoping the ready to feed will keep him regular. It's so annoying because I spoke to C&G and they said they are exactly the same but clearly my LB has an issue with something in the powder.

Any experiences or views, would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

My daughter has been on Hipp Organic since 6 months and has never had any issues with constipation. She's on the growing up milk now. xxx

Can't see how old is he!

Have you tried 1/2 Oz of water throughout the day ?

Hipp organic was the only brand that didn't constipate my lo too x

Our son has been on Hipp organic since 8 weeks as our doctor said it would be a 'gentle milk' on his tummy as he was really constipated. He is much better on it and far less windy!

I've known people who have to feed just ready made as powder didn't agree with them or they didn't like it.
Im afraid only thing I can say is.. In experiences ive seen, the parents have had to stick with it x

I've heard good things about Hipp organic - I would use this next time if combi feeding again.

Have you tried Aptamil comfort? If you're switching from Aptamil stage 1 it shouldn't bother LO because it's the same brand & comfort is easier on their tummies. Our LO rarely suffered with constipation after we swapped to comfort. LO poop is likely to be green on it but loose. The green is normal

Could you not do 50/50 powder to ready made? Perhaps that might help or maybe just one feed a day premade to ease things

What I used to do was an extra ounce of water compared to the amount of powder.

Same.

Other than that contipation can be relieved by giving extra cool boiled water.

(the physio I went to see explained this to me, but dark and hard, strainy poos is usually not enough water, this explains it in adults aswell as baby's)

Hope that helps

My daughter had terrible constipation on SMA so we switched her to Aptamil and she was fine - I think it is just a case of seeing which formula works best for your baby but you shouldn't swap them too often as that can make the problems worse. I rang up maternity ward in a right state asking for advice on my daughter in the early weeks as she was always crying due to constipation and they said give her cooled boiled water as well as milk and also squeeze a fresh orange onto a sterilised teaspoon and give her that either on the spoon or add it to her water up to a max of 1 teaspoon 3 times a day for a couple of days. It did the trick and got her bowels moving x
