I'm booked in for a sweep at the wekend if my labour hasn't progressed, just wondering what they actually do? Does it hurt? And most importantly does it work?

They put 2 fingers in your cervix and sweep the membranes. It can hurt, but the key is to relax. I tensed up a hell of a lot that i was shaking before hand and it hurt me. There is a little bit of blood after too. It is supposed to start you off within 48 hours. Mine didn't work but i was already dilated.

Mine hurt quite a lot... I had already started losing my plug the night before but my cervix was still high and tightly shut! My waters did break though within 48 hours of the sweep although I'm not sure if the sweep contributed to that!

Thanks for your replies  It doesn't sound very pleasent but I'll just have to try and relax and get on with it! At least I get my gorgeous baby at the end of it all!
