Struggling with lunch ideas

Hi all,

I'm quite a fussy eater and am struggling with what to eat for lunch. I'm a teacher so usually make something to take to work. I've been having sandwiches and also having yoghurt and some fruit but I'm just bored of them and most fillings I like I can't really have!

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could eat? I was thinking I could make pasta or something and eat it cold the next day?

Also having 1 chocolate bar a day- is this bad? My mum said it was quite a lot of sugar and I then got upset as I'm addicted to Pepsi and since TTC and finding out (6wks preg) I've had only 2 Pepsi's so I've cut down so so much! I can't cut out choc as well!!

Thanks :)

Are you limited to what you are eating because of morning sickness/nausea? Or just because of what you should and shouldn’t eat?

In my first pregnancy, from 8 weeks to 24, I lived in orange juice ice lollies. I literally ate nothing else. And when I could eat other things again the fatigue hit and I was having a can of red bull plus 2 bottles of lucozade to get me through each day (slap my wrists; I know I shouldn’t have) but my little boy has turned out just perfect. This time around, until last week I’ve been living on crisps as they’re all I could stomach. Fatigue has hit once again but this time the smell of red bull makes me heave so cant drink that! I genuinely think too much pressure is put on women these days on what they should and shouldn’t be eating. Whereas I really think it should just be everything in moderation.

Maybe try cold pasta salads. They should be able to keep you going through the day :)

Have some nausea but it's not stopping me eat just yet, more what I shouldn't eat and that I'm fussy! I think I'm getting told so much information and I'm trying to be perfect to prevent anything bad happening and it's just got too much. I'm constantly starving so was using my chocolate bar for after work when the kids have gone but I'm not going home for tea yet and that keeps me going.
Thanks :)

I’m a fussy eater too so I feel your pain! I don’t eat veg but I do eat fruit and lots of it! Although I’ve always found that fruit kicks the nausea off so I have to wait til hats over before I can touch any! There’s so much to take in and so many people will give you so much different information that it’s difficult to digest (excuse the pun!) the things I’ve been concerned about in both pregnancies is obviously alcohol (I don’t drink much anyway - only the odd drink at Xmas and new year so not really a problem for me), making sure steak is well done and until recently making sure any egg I ate was fully cooked. But I’ve recently found out that as long as the eggs have the lion on them they’re ok to eat runny (thank god, I can only eat eggs runny!) and also sandwich fillers are ok which in my last pregnancy I avoided because I though I wasn’t allowed the mayo in them!

Are you taking pre natal vitamins? I wouldn’t worry too much about what you’re eating - just eat what you can. As long as you’re getting sustenance to keep you and baby growing it’s better than not eating or drinking anything at all! :) hope you find things you can eat! X

Yeah I think I'm just overwhelmed with all the info that previously I didn't have to care about! I've had some nausea over the last few days and diarrhoea last night so I was stressing that I'd had left over chicken too long after it as I read no more than 24 hours, so that's freaked me out. I guess as I've found out so early I'm just obsessing and stressing over everything because I don't want it to be my fault if the worst happens.. A friend of mine didn't realise she was pregnant until really late in so goodness knows what she was eating/drinking and her kid was fine!

This is going to be a long road ahead!

It's a very long road! We found out both times at around 4 weeks - it meant a very long time to go assuming everything was ok but secretly panicking that you'll be told the worst news! I think the stress of worrying over what you're eating is likely to do more harm than if you were to eat something 'wrong'.

Try and enjoy the first few weeks as much as you can :) time will soon start disappearing :hugs:

Made a basic pasta and salad lunch ready for tomorrow! I know I can't eat this every day but it's a start!

You could if you wanted to! Nothing in the rule book says you couldn't have it every day for the rest of your pregnancy! :) might get a bit boring though  :D

I need to start being a bit more prepared for breakfast and lunches now my nausea is dying down :)

Honestly I wouldn't worry about the chocolate!! I've had nausea from 3 weeks (before it even showed up on a test!), sickness from 7 weeks, and I am still sick at 26 weeks with hyperemesis. I've had several doctors and midwives (i moved so have had 2) tell me just to eat sugar because it will help with the nausea and elevates your blood pressure (I have concerningly low blood pressure), to drink coke because the bubbles help (though be careful with your caffeine intake - I don't know how much is in Pepsi specifically), to eat "as much chocolate as I like" because it also contains iron and my iron is low (all these things low due to the constant sickness).

Prior to pregnancy I was the healthiest, fittest person I could be, I was vegan and lived on fresh fruit smoothies and a ton of vegetables. I drank up to 5L of water a day because i did so much exercise. As soon as I got pregnant the taste of water made me vomit, I cannot stomach vegetables or fruits aside from potatoes, and even then I've taken phases to them. Basically its been explained to me like the baby is feeding off my reserves which were the uber healthy nutrients I had. They've been a bit greedy though and left zilch for me. So the baby is super healthy and doing excellent, I am literally dying a death. I've resorted back to being w veggie cos I had cravings for dairy and I can only eat what I crave, everything else comes straight up. Forgive yourself for the pepsi, chocolate etc. Just do your best to stay alive and eat as well as you can manage but don't feel bad for eating what you feel like eating, sometimes its all you can do. And considering at least 5 different health professionals have advised me to stick to sugar, chocolate and coke in particular to help give me calories, boost my blood pressure and even give me iron, I really wouldn't worry about it! Don't be so hard on yourself. Just be careful if you already have diabetes with sugar, but as my blood sugar is very far from diabetes its not been a problem for me.

Sorry for such a long post! If you can stomach it, I'd advise broccoli, chick peas or beans in a pasta or quinoa with maybe tomatoes or sweet potatoes to help fill you up? Also lots of good protein, iron etc in there. Beware of spaghetti though - it melts into one mass while digesting, so if you vomit it up, you will choke on it. Stick to smaller individual pasta shapes if going for pasta!

What about hummus with vegetable and salad sticks with pitta bread?
