I had a vaginal swab taken when I went to the doctors with brown spotting a week or so ago. They just called and said it showed an infection of something called strep and I need antibiotics? Google is just confusing me. What is it? Is it serious?

All I'm finding when I Google strep is one where I need antibiotics in labour not now. But I'm thinking I either have the wrong one or my doctor is treating it incorrectly.

Is it strep B?

If so strep B bacteria can be found in both the vagina and your digestive system(If I remember correctly) It's quite common in pregnancy.

From what I know if it's strep B this can be passed to baby through the amniotic fluid as well as during labour. I assume this is why your GP wants to give you the antibiotics now to minimise any chance it being passed to little one.

My apologies for not having much information on it but this is all I can remember from my days of being a student.

Xxx

What crinkles says is correct if it's strep b. There's a very teeny tiny tiny chance of it causing problems during pg which is probably why they want you to take antibiotics - just being cautious. Usually you might have a swab at 36 weeks (you'd normally have to do this privately) and if it was present then you'd have antibiotics in labour. I'd give your gp or mw a call for some advice though just to clarify for your own peace of mind. We can have strep b on and off throughout our whole lives, it's normal and harmless to us x

I'm getting the antibiotics tomorrow. I'll bring it up with my midwife next week too. Spoke to my grandma and she said it's completely random. 1 in 4 women just ... have it. No signs nothing
