Hey everyone...

My baby is 15 weeks old and has quite a bad strawberry mark on her lower back, which travels down right into her bum. I didn't even know what it was, and have no experience of it, health visitors and a doctor have told me that if it starts bleeding to seek medical attention and that essentially, there is nothing that can be done.

The problem is that one bit of it is like a flap and goes right down to her bum, if it continues growing it's possibly going to cover her hole that's how close it is at the moment. Her upper ones have also ulcerated and I'm having real problems trying to heal it - I try and leave her nappy off but I can only do that so often, I've tried sudocream, Vaseline, and I've now resorted to putting a dressing over it, as when she poos, she literally screams the place down coz the poo has gone into the open wound...

Has anyone else had one that sounded like this, and what would you suggest?
I'm tempted to go back to the doctors, but I'm wary they will just tell me there is nothing that can be done. The NHS website states there can be treatment options available but at the moment, I'm struggling to get help off anyone!

If it has ulcerated you need to go back to the GP as it could get infected. I would ask to be referred. Have a look on the Great Ormand Street website for their information on haemigiomas, it’s really good. From reading they tend to treat those on the face that may impact on vision but leave others. Obviously if it’s causing issues something needs to be done.
My 4 year old has a deep haemigioma in his thigh which wasn’t found until he was 2 - it’s just a lump under the skin in his leg -and is currently being investigated as it’s not shrinking and potentially still growing. I’ll see if I can link to the GOSH info x

Hi, I also have a daughter with 2 strawberry marks so can completely understand how you’re feeling! One is on her tummy & one on her back so I don’t have experience with genital area. The one on her back is quite large though and did ulcerate. We treated with a cream called polyfax, dermol 600 for bath and specially prescribed dressings.
If you are on Facebook there is a great group called Birthmark Support Group - the clinical nurse specialist at GOSH is also in the group & can advise. I would go to GP and demand referral to dermatology though, depending on where you are there are hospitals that are more specialist. Sounds horrible for her, poor little thing. Hope you get sorted really soon x

Also, there is something that can be done for problematic Hs - a drug called propranolol which I have seen having some great results. Join the support group, so much info on there & you’ll feel loads less alone :) x

Brilliant, thank you. I have asked to join the support group and will take a lookthrough the GOSH info.
I think I defo need to go back to the gp - I tried to cover her ulcerated one with a dressing today but poo managed to get under it, and the bit near her bum was bleeding, bless her she was not happy! Xx
