We just had our neighbours round shes asked us if we can put a littler tray out for our kittens because they have taken to going to toilet in her garden, and her dog seems to be eating it and getting ill.

I have put a litter tray out but i cant see it working the world is a cats litter tray! And I was thinking about those green jelly things you can spread on your lawn but I don't know if that would be safe for her dog. Would anyone know what would be safe and would stop our kittys going in their garden....me thinks if the dogs eating the poo then its not gonna be to worried about eating anything else thats put down.

Any ideas? x

Many dogs will eat cat poo alas. I forget the reason why its thought they do it. And yes, it can have a bad effect on some dogs :puke:

It can't be very pleasant for your neighbour. At least she was kind enough to come talk to you about it. I have to say thats the downside of someone else's cats. I'd be hacked off if someones kitty was using my garden as their litter tray more than occasionally. My thing would be to squirt the cat with water every time I see it appear over my fence and shoo it out of the garden.

If you have been using a litter tray since the beginning hopefully your cats will begin using it more. If they have not had one till now it might prove harder. Also once outside there is no set way of making them come back to use it. Do you have any soft ground your cats can use? Or is it all hard to dig or paved? If so then consider giving them a decent soil area they can use and clearing it away as they poo in it.

I'd google and research cat deterrents you can give to your neighbour, be it a spray that goes on the soil that cats dislike or a water spray she can aim at them if she catches them in her garden. Or ask your vet if they have anything you can use.

Oranges/Citrus... keeps cats out of where you dont want them to go.

My dad has his own company with outside displays and our cat used to go and make herself comfy in them until a friend told us about oranges.

I think you can get a citrus smelling spray for it

They have always used a litter tray, before we moved we lived next to a fairly busy road so they should hopefully use it if its there. We also have bark and they like to use that so we cant understand why they are using the neighbors garden....we think they may be doing it just to annoy the dog!!!

I would feel quite cheeky just suggesting things to stop OUR cats doing stuff in their garden so if theres sprays thats safe for the dog then I would buy it but if they stop going in her garden then surly they will just find another persons garden to use?

Mabey we will just have to keep them in the house alot more which is a real shame but I really hate the thought of them making the dog ill.

How old are they if you dont mind me asking? Its just you say kittens and as far as I know you shouldnt let them out until they have had all their vacs and been spayed/neutered.

If i'm wrong please tell me cos our 4 month old kitty is driving us mad with his energy and cant wait to go out!

oh and yeah, anything citrus like will keep them away. :)

You're right, they shouldn't be out until about 6 months, with their vacs. Although, strictly speaking, they're kittens until they're 12 months old aren't they? I still call oour kittens and they're getting on for 8 months old.

:D They have all had their bits and pieces done they are 9months haha I still call them kittens.

I have heard that cats hate stickyness like double sided tape on their paws so would that sticky paint you can get to stop people climbing buildings and stuff work? Our house and garden is completely fenced so that might would work because they wouldn't like jumping on the top of the fence?

I would be careful with paint as they will try and lick it off their paws and that could be nasty, and in all honesty if your neighbour doesn't like them going in her garden then she should take measures herself....perhaps suggest she put orange peel around her borders and where the cats are going?

Only 2 months till my mad cat can go outside.....hes driving me barmy and spends a lot of time meowing at the window and watching the birds and other cats with envy.....aw bless hehe

you can buy lion poo pellets at the garden centre which are said to keep cats away and also I've heard that they dislike curry powder. I think my mum had some degree of success with currey poweder but needs to be reapplied often. If you have an asian supermarket near by you will be able to buy a couple of large packs for not a lot - maybe you could get your neighbour a couple of packs and see how she gets on with it?

Really had to moan at this one...

in all honesty if your neighbour doesn't like them going in her garden then she should take measures herself

We have about 4 cats who use both our front and back gardens as litter trays - none of them ours. They poo in the borders and on the grass. It's horrible. Whenever I'm weeding the borders I get cat poo on me and whenever we cut the grass we end up having to clean poo out of the flymo :puke: It's really vile. We've tried everything but no success. I find it really irresponsible. If I let my dog or child go and poo in their gardens it wouldn't be acceptable so why is it up to me to make sure someone else's cats don't poo in my garden???

What would you suggest then?

Cat owners cannot be sure where their cats are at all times like you can with children (so bad comparison really lol) and if there is a way of controlling where your cats go, I would really like to hear it!!!

If neighbours cats were going in my garden....well its my garden so up to me to take measures...surely?

Theres plenty of things you can put in your borders etc to stop cats going there.

Seriously I've tried loads of things - orange/lemon peel in the bushes, that blue gel stuff that's supposed to repel them, squirting them with water.... :( I'm not trying to have a go. It just upsets me when it gets everywhere. I like cats just not their poo and I'm running out of ideas. It's my garden, I try to keep it nice and my kids and friends kids should be able to play in there without getting cat poo on them.

After speaking to the vet (where we take our dog who I clean up after religiously when he's out and would never allow to run into someone's garden to poo) she said the best thing would be to put a litter tray outside and then they'd use it. So I need to buy a litter tray, litter and start cleaning up after other people's cats in my garden....?????? :wall:

We have decided to try and keep the cats in a bit more. I'm worried as I know that by the end of this month its going to start getting warmer and I think its gonna stink and then we will really have some problems. It will be okay towards the summer as we will be in the garden a lot anyway and where we are our cats will normally stay.

To anyone that does use pepper powder please please don't as it works because the cats in agony! They walk on it with their paws and then they will lick their paws or wash their faces and it goes in their mouth and eyes and burns. Also in a area with squirrels they will literally scratch their own eyes out it hurts them that much. :(
