Hey everyone.

We got our sperm analysis results and motility and count are within normal range however the morphology results aren’t good. 3% normal and 97 % abnormal.

Has anyone had any similar results to this or know if this means we are out or not?

Had a look on google and looks like we can still get pregnant but there are a few sites with different info. Some say can improve with supplements. Some say nothing can do.
I’m in panicking mode at the mo.
Thanks everyone.

I'm sorry you're feeling upset. I realise that looks like a terrible result but actually the majority of sperm in a normal sample are abnormal. 4% is actually considered normal morphology (look up the NICE guidelines).

As for the GP, he probably hasn't hidden anything as in my experience, they really know nothing about fertility. He will see a set of parameters and the results are outside that. That's it. I basically had to hand hold mine through some tests I needed.

What I find more concerning is that he's telling you that you can't be referred for a year. Again my point about GPs not knowing what they're doing! You're over 35 so it should be 6 months (see NHS website) and you now have a potential fertility problem so again should be referred now. I would be going back and pushing for this.

My OH had an abnormal result initially. His issue was motility but my points still stand. I got him on conception vitamins, better diet, more exercise. Would have cut caffeine, alcohol, smoking if any of those had applied. Sperm tests should be 3 months apart and after we'd waited this long his sperm was completely normal. Don't know if anything we did helped or if it was just a dud sample.

Either way, we did conceive naturally in the end.

How that helps and feel free to ask if you have any more questions. It really does feel like the world has ended at this point.

Oh and for the record, I don't believe for a second that this alone means you're out. It's a numbers game at the end of the day and it only takes one.

What were his other numbers? Do ask for a print out that way you have your own copy.

Lolly - how many were motile? Thats another important one.
Like with us & low count perhaps time to google Sperm Morphology foods/supplements and add some and ask for a repeat now, rather then later, but add these new foods/supplements asap!
I dont mean it badly but its very weird atm how everyone i know for their infertility tests - it is the man coming back bad. I wish you all luck for your own personal future tests. Hopefully it is just male factor.

, carnitine has positive effects on sperm motility and morphology. Simultaneous administration of vitamin E and vitamin C reduces the sperm DNA damage.

and one last copied, pasted reply about bad morphology and what happened to them, alwasy hope!!

I would try IUI. I have read about several women on these sites that conceived naturally with 1-2% morphology it just took them well over a year. If count and motility are good ...low morphology is not the end of the world. My DH (dear husband) is on conceptionxr(expensive) The urologist said it takes 70-90 days for sperm to be made. So your DH (dear husband) would need to be on vitamins or supplements for 3 months before doing IUI. My DH (dear husband) will go back to the urologist soon for a second analysis since he has been taking it for 3 months now. Hopefully his numbers are better. His first analysis -count was 32 million, 39% motility and 2% morphology. We plan to trying for the rest of this year and then do IUI (intrauterine insemination) early 2014 if we aren't pregnant yet.

Good luck!

I said to the doctor that the guidelines were to be referred at 6 months. He said he has referred people over 35 yrs and they’ve always been referred back and told to wait 1yr sometimes 2. I’m going to speak to him again though.
The other counts were 60 million. And motility was 66% so they are good. We just got a shock with the 3% normal mark.
Thank you for your advice x

Hi,
No liquifaction results just the motility with was 66 % and count at 60 million which you know.
Thank you for all this information. I feel a little more positive now I’ve slept on it and done some research. It’s hit my
OH hard though. Going to talk with him when he’s back from work. Thanks for all the info. Xx

So motility isnt a issue nor is count just the morphology. Id request a new sample and impliment new supplements/foods in mean time. :)

That's good that everything else is normal. We were the same, it was just one thing.

Can you see a different doctor? I'd certainly be pushing to be referred sooner.

Hi lolly,

I really wouldn’t worry about your OH’s results, like everyone else has said - they’re fine!

My OH had his done a couple of years ago, he also had 3% normal. His count and motility were really good (I can’t remember the numbers now) so our consultant said he wasn’t worried about the 3% since it’s only 1% lower and because his count/motility was good it doesn’t matter. If either of those were lower though they would have done something about it, otherwise the 1% difference isn’t anything to be bothered about.

Hope this is all reassuring! Maybe check your ccg for your area in case they have imposed a rule about the 6 month-year thing for over 35s. Wouldn’t have thought the NHS would have it on their website if it was subject to change for different areas but definitely worth a check.

Oh and if you notice on my signature that I’m still trying for my first - that’s pretty much down to my fertility issues not his sperm! So don’t let that put you off :D

Thankyou. This has reassured me. I’ll see if can find something on ccg website. I found all the things regarding ivf criteria so should fine something x
