I have to go see the consultant in 10 days time, as they are wondering whether I have onset of SPD. Does anyone know anything about it? I don't really know much about it at all, even though I'm a physiotherapist, I feel like I should know about it! I have been getting random pains, especially in my hips and groin area, and on certain movements. I've been trying to work out what movements aggravate the pain but the pain is really sharp and quick so it's all over too quick for me to figure it out. It's getting worse at the moment, esp as I'm on my feet all day, currently working on a busy orthopaedic surgery ward. I guess the people at work would be the best people to ask, since it's orthopaedics, but I'd rather not.

Does anyone here know more about it??? I'm kinda nervous now! Sounds like it's something I REALLY don't wanna have...

Good ol' SPD! I am seeing my midwife on Wednesday and I am going to discuss it with her as I think I may be getting it. I don't really know much about it. My mum had it when she was expecting me and apart from reading information online I can't help you much. I hope you get it sorted though. Let us know how it goes!

Hi, My midwife says I have that too. :( Mines comes on from sitting down for too long and laying on my back ) something to do with baby weight on spine affecting the hip joints). She didn't suggest much could be done for it tho, so I would be interested to know what they say at your appointment if you don't mind ?. xx
Hope you get it sorted. x :)

Its really horrible, I had it in my last pregnancy and it has come on earlier this time.

Some of the women on here have gone to a physio, and this sometimes seems to help some people. I am sure someone will give you some more info.

I find what helps me the most is sleeping with a pillow in between my legs, otherwise its too painful to sleep.

Hope it dosent get too bad for you

Also should add.......I was expecting the spd this time, so I chose all the large items I wanted e.g pram, cot......and I bought them early on before the pain made shopping a real ordeal.

More  for you.

Reading online will gets you lots of info on it.

It may be that its just your joints softening and it won't get any worse than this. Slowing down and not spending so long on your feet may help also. You may find adjusting your sleeping position benefits you. As has been said, a pillow between your legs in bed is always worth a try.

If you search for SPD on the forum search here, you'll also find lots of old threads on it which might help you :)

They thought I had it a while back as I was presenting with early onset symptoms, but they have never progressed past that point luckily. Some women have it severely and can hardly get around and are on crutches or in a wheelchair. I now put mine down to just my joints softening up and the usual pregnancy aches and pains. It levelled out for me. Mind you, my early pain was an agonising aching one. I could hardly walk up the stairs it hurt that much. It was a slow process and one step at a time. I was in agony and nearly cried when that happened.

SPD has to get to a certain point before physio is used my MW said. I was given a couple of weeks to see how my pain progressed and at the end of it, my MW said it was within reasonable limits and she felt diagnosing it as SPD needing treatment wasn't really warranted, which I thought was fair enough. I am mobile, its painful some days but for the most part its fine and I deal with it when the pain happens is all now. I just lump the aches and pains in with all the other delights of pregnancy

Good luck and hope you feel better soon

I#ve got it too and didn't suffer with it in my first pregnancy until 34 weeks, this time it was 14 weeks and came back with avengeance, get a birth ball they are fab for easing the pain, also make sure you do everything you can sitting down!

Hi,

I don't know much about it myself. My friend had it very badly and it took her a long time to get over it afterwards (getting about was a big problem for her) but she had lots of physio and I don't think she got it nearly as much in her second pregnancy. I know there are varying degrees of it though so hopefully yours won't get that bad.

All the best
