Morning all,

I'm planning to go to a Spa Day with my friend.. and wanted to check about Jacuzzi's, Sauna's, Steam Rooms... Can I go in these? And whats the reason that I can't??

Do I have to book a Mum-To-Be package, or can I have facials and massages? I have a feeling that I cannot have normal massages? Is this right?

Hope you're all well.

xx

You should avoid jacuzzi's, sauna's, steam rooms - you shouldn't be increasing your body temperature - when your body temp increases in pregnancy it puts your heart under even more strain.

Most spa's won't massage you in the first tri, but it depends on the spa. You will need to ask them. You also need to be careful which essential oils they use on you, as some should be avoided during pregnancy. Facials are fine at any point in pregnancy.

Th best thing is to call the Spa and ask their advice.

Your best bet is to call the spa you intend to go to and advise you're pregnant and ask what you can have. I'm pretty sure that the sauna etc is out for you though.

Pssf.... I was told to avoid saunas when I went on an American cruise at 16 weeks.... but then we went to Finland after, and they said it was fine to use a sauna when pregnant.

Its not the fact of using a sauna or hot tub that is the problem, it is the prolonged exposure to heat which allows your core body temperature to rise. It is the same if you were to get a fever for example.

Finnish people rarely go into saunas and just sit for a long time, they have 5/10 minutes in.... have a cool shower (or jump in to freezing cold lakes but I don't recommend that even if you weren't pregnant :rotfl:) , another 5/10 minutes in, then another shower etc... Its for this reason that 90% of Finnish women use saunas throughout their pregnancies, yet have lower instances of congenital defects, where as other countries such as Ireland/Australia have higher rates of defects yet lower usage of saunas.

When you're pregnant, you have to take care not to over indulge in many of lifes great pleasures (drinking, smoking.... Brie..Pate.... *drools*).... and well Spa's and Saunas are the same.

BTW I injured my back at 15weeks and had lots of daily massages to help me walk so you can have massages while pregnant... there's just some essential oils you cannot use...

Thanks Squiglet

I think I will go a massages then when my friend is in the sauna, drinking champers and eating pate!! :)

i've nipped in and out of saunas and jacuzzis - as squiglet says, its just your core body temperature that you shouldn't raise to high. but in these days of litigation over anything and everything, we're told not to use them at all. as long as you don't find yourself getting hot its ok; i only stay in for a max of about 4-5 minutes and it makes me feel so fabulously relaxed that i'm pretty convinced its only doing me & trog good.
