hi guys

I will try and make this quick, seems alot of you have cribs for night and moses baskets for day naps and for travelling with.

I was going to use a crib at night and then pram top for naps through day.

Now, mother-in-law has given me crib, it is 30 years old, quite small, quite claustrophic and is made of wicker, after years of being stored in an attic the wicker has come away. She is paying someone to clean up the rough edges. She has also bought a £40 mattress from mother care.
Anyway....this crib has been sitting in her living room waiting for the man to come in the SMOKE for the last few weeks, mattress and all!!!!

my own mum thinks a good soap down, wash the mattress cover, air everything and it will be fine but she said she will buy me a moses basket as well for naps in day instead of pram and for changing rooms.

To be honest if I have the moses basket I am thinking of 'pretending' to use the old fashioned crib but in reality ditch it.....nice of my mother-in-law to make the effort but.......

What would you guys do?
xx

you have answered my query

for the sake of her feelings, I will put it in bedroom made up and buy a
nice moses basket for the night. My mum is going to get me one from
mother care, you are right, no way should I use something 30 years old, I need to go on an assertivness course guys, this smoke issue is bothering me. She rolled her eyes when I said smoking outside and that is the rule....gawd !
Moses basket and pram for me then !!!
thanks, this forum is invaluable.

30 years old? I'd not be keen to use it tbh. I'd keep it around for a bit in case she visits but not use it. Or else be honest and say you have no need for a crib.

We are using a moses basket for the early months, both at night and during the day downstairs and also the pram for naps if downstairs or out etc. We don't plan on using a crib at all for night and our LO will go straight into a cot once they have outgrown the moses basket.

I don't think you need a moses basket for the day unless you really feel the need. I'd say a pram or the crib in your room would be fine. But thats just me.

I am with Sherlock here. Ditch the crib (you can't have the baby sleeping on a mattress that has been around smoke).

We are using the moses basket exclusively during day and night until baby gets bigger and will go into his/her room in the cot.

(my MIL wanted to get us a crib too - but we just said there was no need. A moses basket will be sufficient)

I personally wouldn't want to use it, but then I'm funny about second hand stuff anyway.
If it was a normal cot you could just wipe it down and buy a new mattress, but being made of wicker I'd be worried about it having dust and stuff trapped between the weave.

If it were me I'd set it up in the house somewhere and pretend to use it, so as not to hurt MIL feelings.
We were originally gonna use OH's old cot, but it had been in the inlaws loft where mice had been chewing things, that really put me off!

Def. ditch the crib. There is no way I would use it if it had been sat in a smokey environment (even if it were brand new)- let alone the fact that its so old.

Get the moses basket instead and just wheel the stinky crib out when MIL visits.

you shouldn't have to pretend to use something if you don't want to! I woul politely say that you only want to use 2nd hand things if they have come from a SMOKE FREE home. That's the safest thing for your baby and your MIL should be abl to see that, surely?!
