I've currently got Alfie in a 1 tog and has been since April/may time. He doesn't have blankets because he tries to kick them off as soon as you get near him

Anyway, over the "summer" he's either been in that, or in a sleep suit or a vest depending on how warm it gets. He is now rapidly outgrowing this one and will be needing a new one within the next week or so.

Do I buy another 1 tog or do I buy a 2.5 as we're coming up to the colder months?

I use a gro egg in his bedroom and it's usually between 20.5 and 21.5. At the moment with his 1 tog and a sleep suit, when I get him up his arms are a little cool and his feet but he's comfortable in the night. He's always slept better when he's a little cooler but never woke when he's been cold either :wall2:

Our house has always been a cold house but this spring we had our roof and cavity wall insulation finally done (there was no insulation anywhere in the house before!) so I'm not sure how warm the house will be this winter.

If I haven't bored you to tears with my rambling, what would be my best option?

With a lighter tog I can always add layers such as a vest and drape a light blanket/sheet over the top. Or do I just go for a heavier tog and strip him down for the moment in just a vest or bed?

There's a thread I started on here a couple of weeks ago titled what tog? Might give you some ideas.
I went for a 1.5 tog which will last our LO until around xmas with the option to layer underneath for now.

Ooh the do them in pink too. Might have to get one around xmas time when we need the next size up.

Wow my sons in a 2.5 tog worh sleepsuit :) he would be cold in a 1.5 tog

You could always buy the 2.5 and put him in a long sleeved best then as winter progresses you could put him back to a sleepsuit? Saves buying 2 :)

We've managed to get a 1.5 which is a little bit heavier than his 1, we will see how he goes then may get another in a 2.5. These will also last him next winter too which.

My LO is still in our room which is very warm in summer - it's 23 degrees tonight! He's in a baby grow and 1.5tog just now but I have a 2.5tog for when he's in his own room in winter as his room us the coldest at 18 degrees x

It really depends on the baby/toddler too. My son (21 months) is currently sleeping in shorts and a t-shirt, no bag, sheet or covers! He's always been warm though. I think we've only ever used a 2.5 tog when it was minus something outside and only for a couple of nights. We're planning on introducing a duvet this autumn, unless he kicks it off, then he'll be back in a sleeping bag!

Personally, I'd always go for the lighter bag and add things underneath as necessary. It's better for them to be slightly cool than to overheat. My daughter once overheated in a 1 tog bag (she only had a short sleeve vest and nappy underneath, I'd followed the official guidelines re: room temp etc.) - she went bright red and screamed the house down. Took ages to cool her off, it was horrible.

H16- isn't it a fab idea?! They didn't have it in the size we needed.

Thank you for the advice ladies. I think I'll start with the lower tog and then we can add necessary layers, and if we need to we can always invest in the 2.5 tog. It's a case of trial and error.

Ella1979- that sounds awful for your daughter. It's a nightmare of mine thinking he might overheat so I always prefer him a little cooler, and it seems to be he's likes to be cool/cold. But then I worry about him getting a cough/cold from being cold!
