Hi everyone,
Work in a nursery where a child who has been off returned today after being off with slap cheek. The mum said that they were no longer contagious although it did flare up while they were at nursery. l called the midwife who told me to contact doc for bloods to be taken and go home. Spoke to doc getting bloods tomorrow. Kinda worried that work think l am over reacting by going home, meant to be going in on Fri for an hour to help out but think its best to stay away this week to incase anybody else comes out with it. What do you think? Just hopig my bloods come back that l am immune as this kinda thing is hard in my job. Worried now!!!

slap cheak is very common in kids and your not aloud to have them around pregnant women, i think its like chickken pox you might be immune to it tho   hence why they want to do a blood test, your not over reacting at all hun

I agree, you're not over reacting at all and I would say it's best to stay away. I had the same scare in my last pregnancy (my nephews both had it), I also had to have the blood test and I wasn't immune to it but luckily I didn't pick it up so all was okay in hte end! I am paranoid this time as I'm pregnant again and scared my son is going to get it or has had it (not always easy to diagnose) and I'll end up with it as I'm not immune :? . x

Your not overeacting hun, best to be safe than sorry, bubba comes first :D Your work will have to understand, its a contra indication to pregnancy so there is nothing they can do or say. Good luck for your blood tests

I am the queen where info on this is concerned.
I am a year 5 primary school teacher and lots of my kids have had it. When they get the slapped cheek look, the contagious stage is over.

It does not really effect adults and 50 % of adults have had it at some point in childhood without even knowing it. However, it can cause problems in weeks 9-20 mainly of pregnancy. Something called fetal hydrops. They will take extra bloods and if there are no antibodies for this slapped cheek (parvo virus) then it means you've not had it yet. This was the case with me so theyve taken extra blood tests and said because theyre aware of it... if there had been any antibodies on my next bloods, it meant ive had it so baby bump will need a few extra growth scans..However my bloods still had none of this. I had about 15 cases of it in my class too...hope this reassures you a bit!

It is worrying as are most things during pregnancy... however it is a very small percent of ppl that are affected by it. One of the year 6's has got it now and 3 doctors have told me not to make any direct contact with her or any other children.

Hope this helps xxxx

Thanks, to be honest l think if l have been in contact with the virus its been on the run up to the wee one catching it. Is it only a risk to the baby if l actually get it? l have been exposed to it in the past and as far as l know l havent had it, just wondering if l am immune. My cheeks were burning a few weeks ago but l thot nothing of it until all this happened today, now l think they are burning again. Prob just being para and anxious. Now l am worried if l do have antibodies that l have had during pregnancy and didnt know. l dont even know if burning cheeks are a symptom.

Oh l hate all this worry, sometimes l think its best not to know so much. We could of all came across somebody in a public place with it and would never know.
