ffs its really getting to me..

just bought a foot spa.. and it says.. consult a dr if ur pregnant before using?
ffs!! everything says ask a dr! are pregnant women just brainless?

for a foot spa?? seriously?! methinks its just the manufacturer covering their arse so that they can't get sued if something (although god knows what) goes wrong. i guess your gp would just say don't have the water too hot??

my fave 'company getting sued' story was a campervan company in the usa, who didn't spell out the fact, in their manual, that 'cruise control' didn't mean that the van would drive itself. when a woman bought one, put it into cruise control, left it driver-less and went into the back to make a cup of tea whilst on the freeway, she was amazed when she crashed and hurt herself - and sued the company for millions. and won.

i have a foot spa... and i know when i use it i can sort of feel the electricity through the water.. ... (or i'm just loopie)... so i would not use it... also... i think its to do with circulation also... as u'r not supposed to use the spa for more than 15 mins.... specially if u got poor circulation...

Q: Why are foot spas not recommended during pregnancy?

A: I think there are two reasons for the 'warning' attached to this sort of product. One is that many foot spas are designed or promoted to be used with aromatherapy oils, and some aromatherapy oils are contraindicated in pregnancy, in this case, it would probably be safe to use the foot-spa without adding the particular oils The second is that there is some concern that the physical action of the spa on the feet may be similar in some ways to the firm massage or pressure applied during reflexology - and certain reflexology techniques may cause inappropriate contractions of the uterus. Providing you use the spa as directed and stop doing so if you find the massaging effect at all uncomfortable, there shouldn't be any problems. I would, however, advise you to be very careful if you choose to use aromatherapy oils during pregnancy - with or without a foot spa. Pure oils can have powerful effects and few have been subjected to any sort of rigorous research. If you would like to use aromatherapy oils during your pregnancy, consult a registered practitioner of aromatherapy or a midwife with a special interest in this alternative therapy. If you are still worried about using your foot spa, or if you have had any problems in this pregnancy, you might feel better checking with your doctor or midwife or contact the manufacturers directly and ask what they recommend for your peace of mind.

lol.. thanks for that.. i just put a foot soak tee tree thing in there.. which isnt dangerous..a dn i put my feet in for about 10 mins.. on bubble and vibrate.. and i have to say it was lush.. id never let anyone touch my feet.. so it was a nice way of relaxing after a very long walk. :)

:rotfl:

I know how you feel but there is a reason for this manily connected to jacuzzis and hot tubs...it's because raising your body temperature could affect the circulation to the baby and cause problems...usually this is in the early stages of pregnancy though.

Jacuzzis and hot tubs are the main problems though because of the high amount of chlorinated water and this can cause problems too by disturbing the natural chemical balance of the vaginal area.
...also there is some suggestion that the bubbles in them can enter the vagina (?)

Also some of the oils, lotions etc even aromatherapy ones used in foot spas can be harmful so make sure you check them out before you used them.

Maybe you could use it without the bubble and vibrating effect just to be on the safe side

Also, as an added bit...you shouldn't used the foot spa if your a diabetic either!

If I've totally confused you I'm sorry but if you want to PM me I can give you a list of suitable aromatherapy oils etc that you can use

I went for a massage when I was about 14 weeks pregnant and the girl wouldn't do it because it sends toxins around your body - she said it was the same for a pedicure.

that is such bollox! (scuse me!) toxins from where? some people need to get over themselves and stop handing out advice if they haven't got a clue about biology.

get someone else to give you a massage, it's great in pregnancy and good practice for your birth partner for labour :D

just use plain oils like almond oil or baby oil.

Okaasan I do tend to agree with you. I'm a qualified aromatherapist and I was taught that caution is the way to play it when massaging pregnant women. It's the oils that can't be used not the actual massage itself.

A lot of therapists will refuse to massage pregnant women in case they have any ill effects after the massage. Lots of people suffer from what is called a "healing crisis" after a holistic therapy...this is normally in the form of a headache or nausea etc...

Toxins are stored in muscles in like a crystal form (knots that you can feel) and massage breaks down these crystals and they are then released into the blood stream to be carried away to the lymph glands for removal...it's said that it is the release of the toxins which cause the "healing crisis"

IMO it's down to the individual therapist if they'll do the massage or not...personally I'd do it but then again I'm fully insured so if my pregnant patient had a problem I'd be covered.

hmm i really think i should get a foot spa, last night after getting out of the bath i sat on one of OH's hospital stools and dangled my feet in the water, they were killing me from working yesterday. but part time on monday yay ten hours less lol
