I've been having awful lower back pain to the right hand side on and off. We got a new mattress and it seems to have helped a lot but ran yesterday and it was hurting a bit whilst I was running, by the time I got home I could barely walk it felt like the right hand bottom side of my back was collapsing!! Anyone else suffered with this? :(

I suffer with lower back pain, even before falling pregnant - I don't think my mattress helps either! But it has increased now I am pregnant and sometimes very painful to walk too..

I would personally ease off on the running if it's making it worse?..

There's a lot stretching and going on at this point which could be causing the pain but if its severe Id perhaps pop to the doctors?

xx

Yeah, my first thought was that running is probably a bad idea at the minute. Sleeping with a pillow under my knees worked wonders for me, as did very regular gentle movement - keeping still was a killer. I'm a bit of a swimming junkie too - that will contribute to strengthening muscles to keep everything in place, but without any impact.

Sometimes lying on the floor with my knees bent worked to slot everything back in place, but at least some of the time that was really unhelpful. Whatever you do, if you think you're about to sneeze or cough, protect your poor back! If possible, get into the foetal position, or child's pose in yoga. The absolute worst pain I've ever been in was when I was lying totally flat on the floor, trying to improve things, and I sneezed. Ugh.

While you're twiddling your thumbs and waiting for it to improve, don't lift anything remotely heavy (no matter how good your technique is), avoid crossing your legs, avoid unsupportive chairs and sit, stand or lie as evenly as possible. And, as July says, try to get referred to an osteopath. Those people be gods.

Thankyou both. I think the problem is that I felt so rough in the 1st tri I have hardly run at all and I've now got muscle wastage. I started yoga today and it feels loads better after just one session! I'm going to continue running as I'll lose all my fitness otherwise. My other hobby is downhill MTB and that's too dangerous so I don't want to quit everything :( I'll continue to see my physio weekly and slowly build my running back up and see if that helps. I did 6 miles yesterday so I might drop back to 3 for abit. Dr'a will just suggest painkillers, I've had injections done in my back twice but during pregnancy they won't be able to scan/offer much more unfortunately. Ps: The mattress I got is a simba. Highly recommended!

You know your own body but I would personally rather lose a bit of fitness then risk doing any permanent damage to my back, you will always be able to get your fitness back. Baby will be putting a lot of extra pressure and strain on your back and muscles which could make the problem worse. Yoga is a good idea, it's good your seeing a physio they should advise what's best xx

The problem is and I've had it before after rest due to injury, when I stop running my back gets worse as the muscles to support it waste. It's more for joint fitness that I want to keep it up as I know if I stop and lose more muscle the bigger I get the worse it will be :( my knees also get bad too as I lose muscle in my thighs which supports them. I think I need to slowly build up and maintain as if I just stop I'll be in agony by the third tri. I've always had joint problems, the problem is the doctors go for pain relief rather than actual diagnosis and treatment of the root cause :(

Ah, I get you. Well, until you can run, lots of walking? Definitely keeping it all moving somehow.

*cough* swimming *cough*

Yes I definitely would still ease off the running personally, one of my friends had a personal trainer through her whole pregnancy and she was doing weighted squats etc regularly which will keep your back and legs strong xx

I can't stand swimming but I may give in! Perhaps I should get back on my bike and do some cross country *yawn*
