Hi All,

I've got into a little bit of a dispute over this on a different forum. I went to a carboot today and bought some bargains. I got a activity mat in excellent condition which i have just washed (by hand in the bath!) i bought a flashing drum toy which hadnt been used and a spiral toy which i have again washed. Now... i posted about my bargains and got a response back saying that i should buy everything brand new as they should be exclusive for my baby. I then discussed it with others and they also said they can see where hes coming from!!??

Ive got a new cot, new moses basket and lots of new toys but i dont see the point in getting everything brand new.. christ the baby isnt going to know the difference.

I feel like a bad mum before i have even started! I think the world has gone a bit mad. I obviously wouldnt give the baby a dirty old toy and would make sure everything is washed.

Im annoyed now..

Would it make you feel better if i tell you that everything i have for my baby is second hand??

Bollocks!!
Send those stupid ignorant people my way
Baby item are hardly used and so long as they are cleaned (i steralize plastic toys) they why on earth shouldnt they be reused, these people obviously have no regard for the enviroment and certainly have far too much money.
Im disgusted that they see it fit for good itmes to be chucked away.
Be proud of yourself hun for the bargains you have bought, i know i am

Thanks Ally.. yes it would! If i had all the momey in the world then yes i would buy everything new but i would rather keep some saved for the really important things!

Cant believe im even justifying myself..christ i had all my brothers hand-me-downs.. thats just what people used to do back in the day.. I'm so annoyed.. such a little pathetic thing but its really got to me. Will blame the hormones! lol

LOL.. i agree.. people expect far too much these days! Ive had so many hand me downs and am so grateful for them. Lets see how they get on when they have kids and are in tons of debt cos everything is "brand new!"

i can tell you now money or no money i still wouldnt buy everything new, i love a bargain and hate the throw away society we live in.

what a load of bolocks.

Apart from my cot, (whch i was also offered second hand but decided to treat myself). everything i have is second hand.

Ill wash the bedding and clothes and just check anything else over

same here, nearly everything i've ever used for my kids has been 'used'

i think the only things we have bought brand new are 2 out of the 4 prams we have. a bumbo. crib (for my 2nd) and a cot.
we've bought new clothes but the majority have come from friends and family whose little ones have outgrown them and are still in good condition.

bottles we have bought new, and a steriliser and breast pump were new.

virtually everything else has been handed down to us.

and you know what, im so glad! cause it means we have a little spare cash that we can use to buy them treats!!!!!

Good grief! There's no way I could have afforded everything new! I had a charity shop activity/gym thing (just whacked it in the washing machine- the squeaks etc were fine) and I'd say that just about 90% of all his toys are from charity shops and were right from the beginning. We have a HUGE library of board and picture books courtesy of charity shops and a lot of his clothes, even when he was newborn came from there too. I had a new mattress which I fitted with one of those babysafe plastic covers and new sheets etc for him but this baby I'm carrying will have all his stuff obviously- even if it's a girl she'll just have a blue t'shirt and I might get the odd dress to put on top! What does he expect you to do with your second one? Buy it all again? Some people! It's not the toys etc that matter, as if a little one is going to care two hoots about where something has come from!

p.s. even my breastpump was secondhand- just as well, only used it twice! As long as you clean and sterilise what's the problem?

Don't feel bad. I go to car boots every week these days! It's no different to buying off ebay!
I got a Bumbo seat off a car boot and it cost me £12. I even got clothes the other day! She's got a gorgeous little denim jacket to wear! I would never have bought one new as it's just too much, this one looked like new!
My moses basket came from SIL but it's still second hand! There are some stunning ones on a car boot that i'd have bought if she hadn't outgrown hers already!
Save yourself a fortune as a baby will never know the difference!

ignore them hun
i got loads of stuff second hand i still buy him secondhand stuff from charity shops/carboots if you can get it alot cheaper then do so they grow out of things so quickly :D
xx

Were these other women a) millionaires? b) not parents?!
LOL Dont let them bother you hun! You will be a great mummy and your LO will love your activity mat and drum!!

A lot of what we got for Austin was second hand, and this baby will have even less brand new (especially if it's another boy!). Most of Austin's clothes are second hand from ebay. The only things I will always get new are mattresses / pillows etc, car seats, and shoes.

Why should everything be 'exclusive for your baby'? That doesn't make ANY sense at all to me.

i buy loads second hand even now for Kieran and he is nearly 7. I still get him second hand clothes from ebay. I mean he is only going out to play and get dirty in them lol!!

I bought loads 2nd hand first time round and i am looking forward to be able to bbb (bootsale bargain buy) for this one too!!

OMG what idiots!!!

I have loads of second hand stuff!! Evie's got second hand clothes too but I washed them properly (which is good enough for me).

:shakehead: Just seen your post that they're not parents. Just goes to show!! :wall:

Do NOT let yourself feel bad... Buying a drum from a car boot does not constitute social services removing your LO from your care! lol  xxx

I have bought from charity shops, ebay and car boots for babs and I will continue to do so! give things a wash etc and with baby stuff its as good as new! I have three black bin bags full of 2nd hand clothes that my friend passed down to me and I have just bought my pram second hand cause it was a bargain!

take no notice its yr life live it how YOU want to!!!!

Well that says it all! Silly people lol! Fair enough if you want to buy all new then its personal choice but its not wrong to get used items! :talkhand: All my children have had used clothes passed on by others and my 3 had a crib that had been passed on by members in the family and Josephs first pram was given to me by my sis etc!
Thats why its more a pain as no one has recently had children to give me everything haha

That's crazy!

I have some second hand clothes, second hand moses basket (new mattress) a second hand changer, second hand changing mat.

Whatever you save means your baby gets more, I can't even begin to understand where these people are coming from!

Jeez that's just snobbery. We had quite a lot of new things (cot, moses basket, pram) but only because there is only one baby (now 3) in my extended family, OH's family are abroad so borrowing things from them is difficult though we have quite a few bits from SIL. One of them is a tummy tub that cost her one euro from a jumble sale type thing. We have a second hand crib (it's a M&P one, really beautiful) - we just bought a new mattress and have been instructed to pass it on to someone else when we're finished with it so someone else can enjoy it.

LOADS of Becky's toys are second hand and they are in perfect condition. My bargain last week was a jumperoo (£70 odd in the shops) which cost me £13 - perfect condition and boxed. There is sooooo much more I can spend the other £57 odd on! My mantra is that she'll hardly use it for any time at all so why pay a fortune for it - and then someone else can enjoy it afterwards!
