Hi all

So its been 8 months since I've last been on here.... Been busy with ds.

So my question is what finger foods do you give your 8 month old?

I'm so paranoid he will choke on everything I haven't really progressed from purreed or mashed up food although I have given him fingers of toast occasionally. He also has weetabix for breakfast.

Also how big do cut things up?

I give my LO finger foods now and shes 5.5 months. The difference in her motor skills in just a few weeks has been amazing.

I do chip size pieces of roasted vegetables and those little organix snacks you can buy at the minute. She will get pasta and bread when she turns 6 months plus little strips of meat and fish.

She does cough/splutter and gag. But that's her learning how to deal with it. It's not nice to watch but I'm keen she gets over that stage ASAP. She doesn't do it as often now. Real choking means she wouldn't make a sound and she's never done that.

im a complete fradycat when it comes to finger food too, i just do toast at the min and ticker dinner/lunch and weetabix for brekfast too
Tor i didnt know that about the choking that will defo help me :)
Do you just give long strips of chicken then? never even thought of giving her anything like that she only has chicken pureed up in her food so far

I haven't given chicken yet, as she's not quite 6 months I'm sticking to veggies for now but will certainly give small bits of chicken in a few weeks.

The sooner she learns the better for me tbh :)

Hey hugsy, I just wanted to post and let you know that your not alone in your concerns here, my DS is coming up for 4 soon but when he was starting finger foods I hated it, I have quite a bad fear of choking and I would panic at first but with time it got easier.

Maybe you could try with banana first so it's not too hard? Mini ricecakes? Cucumber and carot sticks etc? or how about cooked pasta shapes? xx

I found the best thing that ever helped me was a munchkin weaning net

You place the food inside the net so baby can chew but without swallowing big chunks / choking. Obviously can't be used forever but it helped so much at first until I was more confident that he was chewing properly xxx hugs xxx

Ahh thanks a million hun, i seen one of them ages ago in a tread on here but we werent at that stage yet so forgot about it

will defo pick one up , cna u put bread based things in them or just more fruit n veg?

No worries hun, was the best thing I ever found! I tended to put more veg in it than anything else really, I'm sure you could try allsorts though x

I got mine from ASDA hun, about 3.99 I think? xxx

Those net things are not really teaching the baby how to handle, chew and swallow solid finger foods though are they? They are effectively a means to get the baby to purée the food themselves by sucking it through a sieve mechanism?

I had issues with James the other week wouldn't eat anything I did wouldn't eat his dinner tonight but he ate a sarnie and some skips and even some milky buttons no problem he chocked a few times but still kept shovelling it in x

TOrino, no, but they help baby get used to chewing and I found it helped me to feel a lot more confident in giving buba finger foods going on from there. I used it as a stepping stone and it helped me a lotx

Agree , I use one of the food nets and I think there great but a nightmare to clean lol. Xxx

I've been really worried about choking with finger foods. I think those little bags are a great idea to get him used to it

I've been giving Jax finger foods right from when he started weaning at 6 months. He has almost anything really...toast, crumpets, organix//baby crisps and biscuits, peppers, banana, blueberries, raspberries, melon, grapes, cooked pasta, bread sticks, home made chips, ham (only in moderation - worried about the salt content), chicken..

I will give him pretty much anything we have, unless I know its not very good! I cut the grapes into quarters and anything big into chip sized pieces.
