Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me if this is correct or not, or just my local NHS cutting costs....

I had a dating ultrasound at 7+1. Then my GP told me I would be hearing from the midwife at around 12-13wks.

On Saturday through the post I got my midwife appointment (17th Aug) and thought that it wasn't too long to wait.

On the same day I also got a letter from the hospital inviting me to my 20wk scan on 2nd October.

I thought I would have to have a scan at around 12 weeks?? Am i wrong?? It seems an awful long time to wait from 7wks to 20wks.

I am a 36 year old first time pregnancy, with a problematic health history as long as your arm. Is it possible that the midwife will have her first appointment with me and realise I do need closer monitoring than 20wks?

I am a little concerned and would be grateful for your input.

i have learnt on here that different areas do the scan times at different times, its best you ring your midwife and find out if this is right for your area or if they have missed something for you to put your mind at rest.

Hi Fruityloop

The norm is that you have a dating scan at 12 weeks then an abnormailty scan at 20 weeks.

sounds like you had your dating scan early.

Hi Bob,

Yes I did. I had problems with bleeding for the first 8 weeks of my pregnancy. I spent more time in the hospital than I did at home!

They gave me a scan to see if I was still pregnant at around 5 weeks, then a dating scan at 7+1.

I will be more relieved once I have a midwife and have been 'booked in' with her. That will happen on 17th August.

:?

Poor you - sounds like you went through hell.

I had a spot of bleeding at 6 weeks and had a scan at 7 weeks to make sure everything was ok. i still got my 12 week scan though.

Talk to your midwife on the 17th and see what she advises.

Think i'd still push for the 12 week scan though, you'll be amazed to how much your little one will have grown by then. :cheer:

good luck hun, and keep us all posted.

I had a 5 week scan and a 12 week scan when I spotted with Ella. Though the 5 week one wasn't a dating one, just one to check she was there. :)

I know in some areas women only get a 20 week scan and that's it (a friend of mine in Bristol did).

The 12 week scan is not just a dating scan, it is called a Nuchal scan and is done to help identify if there is a chance of a Down's baby........it has to be done between 11 & 14 weeks, it determines if there is further need for testing, and the relevant blood tests are done at 16 weeks!

But again, there are many Health Authorities that are keeping costs down and not offering ladies the 12 week scan, so I would find out if I was you and push for it if possible

Hiya hun, uless something is wrong with you or the baby they dont normaly offer more than 2 scans.... you get your first dating sacn and then another at 20 weeks. I know it seems like a long time to wait, but the time will just fly by :)

Might be worth going private, they can do normal ultrasound as well as those 4d scans cost from about £80-£260 depending on what youre having. When I had DD we had scans at 20 weeks and 32 weeks so nowadays youre last scan is at 20 weeks which leaves a long long time until baby is born so I'm definately saving up to have one at around 26-28 weeks :)

Hi Fruityloop,

I'm 36 and pregnant with our first baby too although I did have a m/c last year.

I'd agree with the others - it sounds like you had your dating scan early.

I had my official dating scan today BUT because I was so worried, I paid privately to have a scan at 7w 2d to make sure everything was ok. It seems like a long time to wait until 20 weeks so maybe going privately for a scan in between times is something to think about??

Can I just approach a private hospital in my area for a scan? I have no idea how to go about it.

Also any idea of how much it might cost.

Sorry to ask - never had any experience whatsoever with private healthcare.

I just did a search on google for private ultrasound+area like manchester. 2d from £80. I'm going for a 4d at around 26 weeks.
We're considering a private ultrasound in the next couple of weeks depending on what midwife says today. Ive got a visible bump and I shouldnt have at this stage and my mums just freaked me out as I knew there are twins on both sides but apparantly there are also triplets on my side

Hopefully I'm just carrying a barrel of water!

We get just one scan here around 11weeks, if we want anymore we have to go private. I would love to know the sex of my baby this time round so will have to get a scan done privately around 20weeks x
