Need help please. Seren has got into the lovely habit of biting during feeding and it hurts. It tends to be towards the end of a feed or if she is getting distracted. She likes to talk whilst eating (obviously is confusing my boob for a microphone) and sometimes when she chats she bits down. I can usually see when she has stopped eating and take her off but then other times she just bites down. I say no and take her off the boob but iot isn't having much effect. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas before I resort to the steel nipple shields.

Hi Beanie

At our local BF group get together today a lady was asking this - her son has just got a tooth and bites her nipple (drew blood the other day apparently  ) the councellor said one way to get them to release is to gently push their head into your boob so their nose is covered and as they can't breath they will release your nipple to open their mouth. Sounded a bit cruel but apparently it works.

Sorry, no idea on how to prevent it!

ouch :x sounds sore  .

sorry i aint got a clue thou

Alex hasnt got any teeth yet but he often either pulls back to look up at me with nipple still in his mouth or he turns his head to look at something with it still in and gives it a good stretch! doesnt bother me too much at the mo - think i have super tough nipps as i never had any soreness or anything with feeding :)
will see when he starts to get teeth

Lucy i can see alex just squirming if i did that and that would be worse!

Hey Beanie

Have you tried using a breastfeeding necklace? If not then Ella says she'll send Seren one to see if it helps her concentrate on feeding more ;)

:D sorry but that made me laugh! I do know how you feel as ewan would look round but would still have me in his mouth - then he thought it would be a good idea to chomp with his gums or just hold the nipple between his gums, which was sore - i had to make sure there were no distractions!

As for the teeth i've just decided to stop feeding ewan now he had 4 teeth.. and left teeth marks a couple of times - i just said NO loudly, enought to make him stop, and he was generaslly ok..

good luck - its like putting your nipple in a mouse trap and your waiting for it to go off!!

This sounds good...I don't suppose you might have a link you could PM me hey  It might also stop her pulling my hair as well.

I really want to continue breastfeeding at the very least til she is one but I don't want her to bite me. Hypnorm, the mousetrap comparison is very apt :D

Brody has done this a few times, cos he's teething.
There's no way I could get one of those necklaces as he is REALLY easily distracted and I know he'd just be looking at it. I can't even read a book when I feed him upstairs in bed cos he's too bloody nosey!

Sometimes I will put bonjela on a few mins before a feed if I know he's teething, that seems to help.

I'm a survivor of "Infant Nipple Muncher Syndrome"!!
Oscar keeps biting down and those 2 bottom teeth seem razor sharp! I have tried a few things - it's the "unexpectancy" of it that gets me..... a quite moment of feeding, easily ended by a chilling scream!

Only advice I have.... get the steel nipple caps! FAST!!

I dont know if this might help as mne is o where ear teething but I used to get sre nipples after feeding.

I contacted La Leche league who asked me many questions and solved my problems, apart from Alex having Colic which my HV and doctor told me he didnt he was biting on me as he couldnt tell the difference yet between my nipples and a teet. I had been expressing milk so my partner could give alex his last feed and he seemed to bite on that and was starting to do the same with me. I had to completely cut out feeding him through a bottle until he was old enough to tell the difference.

No more sore nnipples now which is good!

Good Luck!
