Right .. to anyone that reads and responds...

Thank you in advance for listening to my ramblings yet AGAIN!

I am calling my GP in the morning to get an appointment after work.

Is there any chance of him signing me off for a wee while for my morning sickness (see previous menace post)... and would i have to ask??

I cant do a self certified sick note as my work are already funny on it being a catholic school and my non marital status plus a baby! grrrr

But i have rested completely this weekend and I still feel crappy. But on a positive note... I feel ten times better for getting some rest.
I know I am pregnant not ill but under normal circumstances id of expected anyone to have called in sick.
I want to be careful no legal action can be taken against me first

thoughts????xxxxx

i cant see why he wouldnt espesh if its already affecting work

You have to self cert for the first 7 days then get a sick note but you may be able to pay for one i dont know.

Yes you will need to self cert first, GPs usually charge to write sick notes earlier. I think it was around £14 when I asked a couple of years ago.

I understand how the school might be a bit iffy with you, but legally they can't discriminated against you like that.

Here's hoping they turn out to be a little more suportive for you. xx

hope your feeling better

a doctor CAN give a medical certificate from the 1st day of sickness if that is when you see them. so if you see your GP tomorrow and he signs you off work then the cert will be dated from that day. what an employer CANT do is insist on a med cert for the 1st 7 days of sickness, you can legally self cert yourself for the 1st continous 7 days (am i making sense?) ie: if you called in sick but didnt see a gp until, say 5 days later you would have to self certify for those 5 days and then GP cert from then on
your employers cannot discriminate against you for being absent with a pregnancy related illness, wether it be self certified or covered by a GP certificate, if they start being funny with you then you would have a possible discrimination case against them

Sorry I didn't mean to imply that you can't get one from 1st day of sickness, just that you may have to pay for it as you do at our surgery.

i got signed off- similar scenario to you. didnt need to self-certify. got a medical certificate straight away. no charge either. if he doesnt say anything about work, ask him/her yourself.

Hi, just thought I'd let you know that I've been off for the last fortnight because of sickness and I got my sick note from day one.

Also phoned up this morning and got another one that lasts until Thursday so I can try and ease myself back into work Thursday & Friday and see how I feel from there.

Good luck!

Joanne

You would probably have to ask unless your doctor brings it up.

Why are you going to your doctor? Is it to get medical advice about feeling ill or just to get a sick note?
Why do you think you might be at risk of legal action?

I hope you feel better soon!

I just thought of a possible complication - as morning sickness is a fickle creature that could disappear tomorrow or hang around for months the doctor would have no way of assessing how long you should be signed off for. You may want to have a clear idea in your head of why you are wanted a doctor's note so you can explain it to him or her. Until now you have been able to continue work so the doctor may be unwilling to sign a note when you have not taken any time off - it's not the doctor's job to give you permission to be off. I completely understand that you would prefer to give school a doctor's note than to have to call in sick yourself but if you're not willing to say you are unable to work it may be that the doctor is also unwilling to say that.

Be ready with information the doctor might ask - how long have you been throwing up for, how many times a day are you sick, how much food are you keeping down.... umm... I don't know what else.

Feel better soon!

Thank you so much for all your replies and helpful words!

I mentioned briefly to my boss that I was going to my doctors after school to see if there was anythin he could give me and she blatantly saw red and was quite off with me. Which albeit led to the shedding of a few tears and a begruntled hug from her. :shakehead:

The doctor asked me how much I was eating, being sick, how long did the nausea last etc and then weighed me. I've actually lost a few pounds since getting pregnant... ??? Well he said although not devastatingly worried he wasn't happy with that and has prescribed me some cyclizine (sp) which i dont need to take all the time but it makes you drowzy and you cannot drive and signed me off for a week stating it as that hypermesis (sp) but i personally after researching do not think it's that severe. Although this doctor was my angel... he was very understanding.

Anyway I called my headteacher last night to which she would not answer her phone  :( I cannot just abandon my class so I must go in today and sort it then.

Thank you again xxxxxxxxx
