Hello ladies, so I have everything (I think) I need for baby so far bar a breast pump. I was gonna go for a Tommee Tippee closer to nature one just 'cos they seem reasonably priced but being a first timer thought I would check and see if anyone could recommend a better one?
I don't wanna buy one because it's cheap then find it a nightmare to use, I have no experience with them whatsoever so any advice would be lovely :)

Don't forget with breast pumps that they are specific to the brand of bottles so if you wish to be able to express striaght into a bottle for example and then put in the fridge or freezer in the bottle then will need to be the same brand. If you will be putting in milk storage bags then I suppose it doesn't really matter.

I was thinking of going for the Tommee Tippee one too as seems simple to use and although I plan to breastfeed I am also buying the essentials set of the same brand for a bit later one when I switch over to bottle feeding.

Ahh okay I didn't realise that, I have Dr Brown's bottles so I guess I'll have to get their breast pump then? xo

You don't have to get their breast pump necessarily. I have tommee tippee bottles but a Philip avent breast pump. I just bought 2 avent bottles to pump into and then I transfer into a pouch/bottle.

I used the tommee tippee manual pump with my first and i've bought the same again this time round. It did exactly what I needed it, I felt in control (scared of elecric ones lol) and it was reliable - no problems with it seeming cheap or anything. Go for it!

I have the tommee tippee electric pump and would really reccommend it, I've only used it reduce amount when struggling with latch on one boob but i managed almost a full bottle in 15 minutes and pain free too

X

Great thanks ladies, I think I'm gonna go for a manual one and see how I go with that, might go ahead and try the tommee tippee one then :)

I ended up getting the medula swing electric pump in the sale, I'll using tommee tippee bottles with it x

( mainly as my sister had a manual and seriously regretted it)

I'm avoiding buying a breast pump all together at the moment, going to first see if baby will breast feed, if I take to it or not, or if I can even express. There are so many 'what if's?' that I just don't want to spend the money just yet. However, I've read that the Medula pumps are pretty good, so if all goes well then might end up buying that.

We bought the tommee tippee closer to nature electric pump and a set of bottles to go with it, mainly because we found it in a toys r us sale for a very good price!
I'll be exclusively breastfeeding for the first couple of months but would eventually like to express as well to reclaim some freedom and my OH would quite like to be able to give a bottle too. :)

Your local childrens center will have a breastfeeding group which will be able to lend you one. Ours lends out a medala electric one which is fantastic. All the bits that come into contact with milk are brand new in sterile packaging so no worries there. Contact them and see what they say.

If not I'd at least wait until baby is here and bf is established. It's not likely you'll be separated for long enough to need one at first anyway

I was lucky and leaked so much from the opposite boob when bfing that I could collect milk in breast shells and saved it. I could collect between 6 and 10 ounces a day so I never thought I'd need one, until my husband left the freezer door open and ruined 47 ounces of breast milk.

I had no idea what to do being a FTM, I really hope I can bf but I know my mum couldn't bf me or my brother (hope it's not genetic!). I've just bought the manual Tommy Tipee one, was half price in boots and got it with my points so didn't pay. I figure that way at least if I can't bf I've not wasted my money, and if I can and need to express more than I can with a manual I won't be bummed out paying for electric as I didn't pay for the manual. That's my thinking anyway! xx

Bethyboo i'm the same, i got the Phillips Avent manual pump on a discount night at Mothercare (mainly cos i got their bottle kit) - and figured at least I have something to hand if breastfeeding goes to plan. And if i take to it like I hope i will, then I will invest in an electric one (prob the medula swing as it seems to have such good reviews)!

But i obv have no experience of this so can't even recommend the manual one i bought yet! All i can say is it looks cool when I took it out the box, if a little intimidating :-o

I've bought the medula swing, 3 extra bottles and some freezer bags. Is it weird that I can't wait to try it out? I think even my oh is a little exited (that's maybe not the right word) to watch the process!
