Hey all,

I went for my first scan yesterday, and (Please don't hate me for this people it's not my fault) I actually have a phobia of pregnancy/pregnant people. I don't know why I just always have since I was tiny. Sitting in the waiting room was just.. Knowing every woman in there was pregnant scared me and I had a panic attack.

Eventually got called for my scan and the second the screen came on and i saw it I freaked out and started crying and made her turn the screen off. Towards the end though curiosity got the better of me and I turned around to her screen to have a little peak! I saw its little mouth and arms and legs move and it's heart beat!!! I'm now 13weeks and 2days.
But needless to say I was extremely freaked out, got my picture and got out of there quick as I could.


Now I wish i would have asked questions instead of running away, and I was hoping maybe some people on here could help me with them! Sorry there is so many!

Firstly how long till they can tell it's sex?
Not knowing I was pregnant, for the first month i was still smoking and i was still drinking for the first 2months until i started feeling ill and thinking it was a virus i stopped, will i have hurt my baby?
I have a low lying placenta apparently and can't do heavy lifting (not easy when your a stable girl!) what does all this mean?
I was asked what side i get the pain on, but i said both, why was i asked that?
Like I said i'm only just over 3months, and it shows already, or is it just because i've been eating so much junk, I put weight on my stomach first always have done or is it actually the baby?
oo and how big is it? The actual baby, roughly at about this stage of pregnancy?

I'm sure i'll think of more but I hope somebody can answer these!

me again! you can tell the sex around 20 weeks, i drunk in my first 2 months of preg with my 1st and shes perfect, low lying placenta can sometimes correct itself as weeks pass, you were prob asked about the pain to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, because you said both the pain is prob just stretching pains, your baby at 13 weeks can suck, swallow and is practising breathing. eyebrows and eyelashes are startin to appear and the liver and other organs are producing fluids. The baby weighs around 7oz. hope this helps

I didn't even think it would resemble a baby yet, probaly why I was so shocked!

its when the baby grows in one of your fallopian tubes(the tubes that carry your egg to the womb/uterus) intead of implating in your uterus, a very dangerous condition but if you've had your scan everything will be ok, they will have checked for that

A low lying placenta is one that has formed low down in your womb instead of higher up.

I had this and normally you will have quiet a few scans to see if it has moved up enough during your prenancy to see if you can have the baby normally.They normally do move as you grow.

I never did but I know some people do get very light-headed. Talk to your MW about it.

I will do because it's horrible, one time i collapsed and smacked my head right off the metal bedpost

Next time fell onto one of the ponies so that was a softer landing


oo another question Are you aloud to have sex while pregnant? I have done a few times so far and I haven't bled or anything, Was reading other womens posts about not being in the mood and stuff.. I'm really the opposite at the moment but is it harmfull to the baby?

Also horse riding, I look after 16 horses, I do lifting such as 2 full water buckets at a time, unloading feed etc etc etc is this bad to be doing right now?

I would avoid heavy lifting, as your ligaments etc will be lossening and it's easy to injure yourself.

It does sound dangerous that you are passing out like this...when is your next MW appointment? I'd maybe ring up and go and see her soon.

I don''t have one yet all ive been told to do is go to the family planning clinic if i want a abortion or to go to my GP if i want to keep it! everythings very confusing at the moment!

Then the first thing you need to do (if you are planning on keeping the baby that is) is make a "booking in appointment" with the midwife at your surgery, where you will be able to talk through all your concerns and questions.

Another question (I never shut up sorry people I'm just nervous and really want to understand things better!)

I'm a very strict vegitarian, not vegan as every time I have become vegan it makes me ill, but I do tend to avoid dairy where possible - and I do not eat tofu etc . Do I need to start eating more dairy things or anything?

im not sure about the veggie thing, but I think aslong as you are taking folic acid then you shouldnt have any problems, but again this is something you can check at your booking in appointment

Was reading your postings and thought I'd reply regarding horses/riding.

I've got my own horse on DIY livery so basically its a twice a day drive to the yard and mucking out, etc (lots because its been so wet they've been in a lot)

I had my little boy on the 4th February and up until the day before I was mucking out quite happily.

You just have to be careful with the lifting - particularly hay bales (although I was doing it while no-one was looking!!), bedding bales, feed sacks, soaked haynets, etc.

I didn't wrap myself up on cotton wool by any means, but just be abit aware of what you're doing - if you're still riding (I rode up to four months, but then the baby was lying very low and I have a very wide cob so it just got too damn uncomfortable as the baby got bigger) again just be careful.

My MW told me no galloping or jumping (obviously)

Technically your employer should do a risk assessment on you (I know with stables sometimes Health & Safety go out the window) - but it's to protect you as well as everyone else so maybe it'll be worth asking? You can stil muck out, groom, etc even if you can't do the heavy stuff.

Another problem is if (god forbid) you have to have a C-Section. I did and it pretty much scuppers you for 6 weeks - you can't drive or really do anything more than lift your baby for 6 weeks while you're healing.

And in a do as I say not as I did moment - please do rest if you feel unwell or just feel tired - somedays I was dead on my feet what with early morning tables, full day at work and then back up in the evening.

Just take care of yourself - at least you're getting plenty of fresh air!!!

Just wanted to add my bit about low lying placenta. I have this on my current pregnancy and I had it with my last. Like Urchin said it usually corrects itself as the baby/bump gets bigger i.e. it moves up and out of the way. But I have been told to avoid heavy lifting too in order to prevent rupture. This is unavoidable for me too with a young toddler to look after but I would definitely exercise caution i.e. try to lift the 'correct' way with knees bent etc.
Also I bought myself a couple of books when i was pregnant first time around, one of which is by Kaz Cooke and its her week by week account of whats happening to her, as the baby grows, and its like a funny diary but also addresses serious issues/questions too. Would highly recommend it!

I rode this morning, A highland pony which are wide so was a little uncomfortable but I do have a dodgey hip anyway so that was prob why, and the baby is putting a hell of a lot of pressure on it Walking round crufts all day yesterday was a nightmare. It's a good job I was a exihbitor on discover dogs so could sit down lots though! !

Done lots of walking today but avoided lifting at the farm. Off to catch the bus soon then do more walking into town.. Oh lucky me I'm gonna need crutches I reccon !

Folic acid is very important, and not very expensive. It can help prevent spina bifida. It's found in normal foods, like baked beans and greens and marmite and stuff, but I took a suppliment to be on the safe side.
