Q. for anyone who had a C-section

Hi

Well my experience is very recent and I'm not sure how typical it was or whether there is a difference between the pain relief used for an elective versus an emergency c section.

They decided to go for an emergency c section after Oscar had got a bit stuck at 8cm. He wasn't in the correct position apparently although I suspect his size probably had something to do with it. I had already demanded an epidural by this point and the anaesthetist was setting up ready to do this when the decision to do a c section was made. The epidural itself was a great relief in terms of the intense contractions I was feeling because I had been put on the drip to try and get things moving along. In theatre the anaesthetist checked he had dosed me up enough by pressing ice in my palm and then making me tell him when I felt the same cold on my legs - he ran the ice from my toes to my armpits on both sides and it was only near my armpit that I was able to feel the cold. I could feel him pressing the ice cube on my legs, just no cold sensation. I didn't realise they had cut me open during the op as it felt as though people were just touching my belly. In fact it only clicked that they were in when I felt a vague tugging sensation in my stomach and I remember having read a c section described like that. It sounds horrible when I describe it but I felt a bit removed from the experience so it really wasn't bad at the time. In fact I was quite enjoying it, in a weird way. We had asked them to play a CD of ours and I was enjoying the music. I remember suddenly hearing lots of awwing from over the other side of the curtain and then a baby crying. It did take a while for me to click that it was my baby crying and that he had been born and I remember thinking that I must remember what song he was born to. There was no pain sensation throughout the whole operation but I was vaguely aware of things happening down there, if that makes sense.

Sorry I've waffled on there  Hope you get the birth you want though :D

I had an emergency c section but before the decision was made I was in labour and had had an epidural and they used the cold spray on me.

From what I was told the cold spray was used on me to see whether they had given me the correct dosage or whether they needed to alter it. They sprayed me from my belly button up to my neck and I had to say when I could feel the cold. I could feel it when they were kind of in the middle of my boobs on my breast plate. The midwife said that the dosage was too high and they needed me to regain my sesation back in my chest, so just below where boobs. They lowered the dosage and continued to spray test me until I could feel it in the right place.

When I was in theatre they didnt use the spray, they just asked me whether I could feel a nipping or a scratch feeling, I said scratch and they upped my epidural till it felt like someone nipping me. My husband told me later that they were cutting me open at that point and the scratch I could feel was them actually cutting me. It didnt hurt though, but I definitely felt a scratch on my skin.

Thats ok then! They didn't tell me i had to tell them if i could feel the cold so i kept repeating myself like a parrot saying i can feel the pressure but not the cold and i started panicing because they weren't saying if that's what i was supposed to be feeling. By the time they'd finished faffing about and umm-ing and ahh-ing over whether or not Aiden had got into the right position it had worn off so i could feel them ripping a 9lb 4oz Aiden out of me (literally), i had a bad experience and it made my bonding with Aiden difficult, that and i was terrified that he was dead because he didn't cry and when i looked over they had an oxygen mask over his face, i didn't get to see him until nearly an hour later when they had stitched me all up (i had to be knocked out).
I think i will opt for a c-section because i'm really scared about having a 'normal' birth again.

Cheers for your replies xx

I had an emergency c-section with a spinal block. I had complications and was open on the operating table for long enough for the spinal block to wear off. It felt odd but not painful.

I had an emergency c-section after failure to progress and ryan's heartbeat was having major decelerations!! They must of sprayed that stuff on me at LEAST 30 times! i was about ready to punch him lol. Altho i could feel the spray on one side where the epidural hadnt worked very well but he just ignored me and i spent the whole of the section crying and shouting with pain and they must of pumped me full of soo many drugs! they also gave me gases through a mask to help but it was awful.... anyway enough of the horror story, i could still feel the spray where it was numb, it just wasn't cold but ask them exactly what they mean if ure worried

You won't feel the spray at all and then when they spray up near your boob for instance you do...

If unsure get them to redo it! Always be sure in yourself!!

xx

Never had a c-section but in my experience of working in obstetric theatres, you shouldn't feel the spray at all and then all of a sudden it will get past a point where you can feel normally again. The surgeon will usually pinch your tummy with a pair of pointed forceps and ask if you can feel anything (and that would hurt!) and I never heard anyone say they could feel it. Only then would they proceed with the scalpel.
