Private or NHS?

Hi there, Would you mind me asking how much roughly it costs for a private birth?

Hiya, well London is of course particularly expensive for everything but roughly it will cost about £7,000. The hospital is a fully private hospital so probably a bit more expensive than a private room at an NHS hospital, but I the obstetrician I am having only delivers privately out of that hospital.

We decided to go private for the following reasons:

- we had already known our obstetrician for about a year as he was treating my ovulation problems, so we know and trust him

- continuity of care; he will be present during labour (at the hospital), will deliver our baby, and perform a c-section if it is required.

- he's available to us, 24/7, by phone (we have his personal phone numbers) so great peace of mind for us.

- he has done all my ante-natal care, scans, etc and I can have a scan each time we see him if I wish to, so again peace of mind

Basically my reasons are the same as yours. We had problems conceiving and the obstetrician I am having specialises in complicated pregnancies, and although I've been well so far (touch wood a zillion times!) I do just feel more comfortable knowing if there are any problems I can contact him 24/7.

Sounds similar to our package - we are outside London and are paying approx £5,000. This is basically our consultants charge (for all ante-natal, labour, delivery and post-natal care, plus 24/7 on call), as the charge for a private room in the hospital is only about £75 a night. He delivers in London and Wycombe, Wycombe being the nearer for us. We looked at full private hospital in London, but only for a split second as there was no way we wanted to have to make to 50 mile journey during labour!
