(I know this is probably not the right section to post in, apologies)

After discovering just how scarily expensive prams are I decided to find a second hand one. While this is still the main option really, I have a few questions:

1. I guess I'm looking for a travel system, but what are the alternatives? All prams/pushchairs that don't come with a carseat look like they're for older babies. What am I missing?

2. I read on another thread that baby shouldn't really sit in the car seat in the pram due to affecting posture/spine, and should be laying down instead. True or false?

3. If buying second hand (or new I suppose), how will I know if the carseat will fit in the car? Are most universal? We will be buying a new car before baby is born, but I don't know which one.

4. My main issue - using a second hand carseat. I was undoubtedly going to buy a new one for safety, so buying a second hand travel system seems pointless?

5. I've found this one for under £100 new. The second hand ones I've been looking at are around the same price. Does anyone have any experience with Hauck prams?

If anyone can point out some different types of prams (other than travel systems) I'd be very grateful.

I personally would not buy a second hand car seat unless it was from a friend and I knew it had never had an accident.

I bought the mamas and papas sola2 travel system and think it's great, yes thy are not supposed to be in the car seat for too long (2 hours was the limits I was told) but it's great being able to clip the car seat into the pram frame if I'm just popping into the shops quickly. Basically if I'm nipping into the super market for a few bits I leave her in the car seat but if I'm going to the shopping centre I take her out of it.
Although not good for posture I think the main worry is strangulation and suffocation due to their position in the car seat.

whether the car seat will fit mainly depends on how old your car is. Newer cars (from 2006 onwards I believe) have proper isofix points so you can buy a base and have that permanently in the car for the seat to clip into. I would recommend getting a base it's much easier then trying to belt the base in every time.

The car we had was a 54 plate and we were told in mothercare it didn't have isofix points so we'd need to belt the car seat in every time, however the staff in mamas and papas informed me the isofix points were there but as it was an older car they weren't labelled as such

Most shops should help you and mamas and papas fitted my base for me

When buying a travel system you still have to buy (with most) the frame, carry cot and car seat separately so you could get a second hand pram and then buy a new car seat that fits

We didn't want a travel system so our car seat stays purely in the car. We wanted baby to get used to being picked up without waking up. We bought a Phil&Ted's navigator v2 as it fits our lifestyle with the added carrycot so she stays flat whilst she is in it.

I agree with not buying a second hand car seat, you just don't know its history. We paid a lot for ours but it is something we feel strongly about. Also, our LO can stay in it from birth to 4 so we won't have to buy another one.

Have a look at the City Mini. The biggest pain about a travel system is that you always have two parts. With the City Mini you can get adapters to add a bassinet on and a car seat in if you like. As a one piece buggy it is very sturdy.

We needed up buying one of these second hand as a spare pram to take into town and when we were having big shopping days so we don't have two bits of pram to fit in the car - they're very popular in our local shopping centre!

most pushchairs we suitable from birth. Pushchairs/strollers you tend not to be able to put car seats on.

2. I read on another thread that baby shouldn't really sit in the car seat in the pram due to affecting posture/spine, and should be laying down instead. True or
true, both my babies have hated their car seat as well.

most are universal.also worth looking into car seat bases.

not really. Maxi-cosi car seats fit on a variety of pushchairs/parks with car seat adopters. I've had 2 different 2nd hand pushchairs but used the same car seat

no sorry. We looked at the due to low price but they didn't have the best reviews.

Hope I've helped a bit.

Baby shouldn't be in the car seat more than 2 hours.

If your buying a second hand pram make sure it reclines fully and is suitable from birth.

In regards to the car seat if your not getting a travel system. I would go straight for an extended rear facing car seat that can be used from birth till 4 years old.

Hope that helps xx

Thank you everyone. We won't be buying from a retail shop but there's no harm going in and asking some questions I suppose!

I fell in love with this one last night a little, I love the colour. Seems it does what I need it to do, but not too many reviews unfortunately.

Hi, was just thinking, the stroller on its own is cheaper and suitable from birth, and can be parent facing, so there's no need to attach the car seat.

If you just got the stroller you could get the Joie Stages or Joie Isofix which are suitable from birth to 4 rear facing. Otherwise you're paying for a car seat you will only be using for approx 9-12 months.

Agreed! However, I like the reversible handle thing - I know that probably seems a bit flippant, but I assumed the stroller couldn't be parent facing? Perhaps I missed that

EDIT - I definitely missed that! And it has the reversible handle lol So yes, get the stroller - and then a separate carseat that'll last longer (and those car seats will fit into the buggy?). Ohh, is it better to have a carrycot or the lay flat stroller? I guess both are fine, but the lie lat stroller doesn't look very comfy for a newborn :-\

Something else as well - I need to buy an Isofix base separately?

I think some of the Joie car seats can be fit with the belt, you don't have to get the isofix base.

I've not really looked into it though.

I do love the Joie push chair you like though. I like that the handle flips so it's parent facing. If I end up getting a stroller at some point I'd probably go for that one too :)

The group 0-2 seats which are from birth to 4yrs won't attach to the stroller, but the stroller is from birth and parent facing so it wouldn't need to, unless you get taxis a lot in which case you wouldn't be able to leave the seat in the car, so getting the group 0 seat that fixes to the stroller would be better. But otherwise you could just get a group 0/1/2 seat and leave it in the car.

That's what I plan to do but I haven't decided what seat to go for yet. Definitely a Joie one though.

I know what you mean about the push chair bit not looking very comfy though, but then carrycots aren't always much better. The one I got with my pram when I had my 9yr old was just a hard piece of thick cardboard under some thin fabric. I ended up putting a moses basket mattress in the carrycot to make it nicer lol.

Joie are good!
I didnt have their travel system ( got an ex display silver cross surf).. But i did get a joie stroller when my LO outgrew the travel system. Had it ages now and it still is a lovely smooth ride!

1. I'd say if you're going to get something like that, get a maclaren one or summit sturdy you know that's going to last you about a year or 2-3.. Plus you want it light! Once a baby reaches about 10kg's having a pram heavier than 7-8 kg's is going to break your back.. I swapped my travel system for a maclaren techno xt when my LO was 8 months..

2. Being able to use the car seat on top of it is easy and convenient.. but it's not like you'd use it all the time. I don't know whether it's worth the extra money..

3. buggy's certainly come from birth onwards..

2. I'm sure the spine thing has something to do with the car seat too, but it too has the effect of the baby having their chin too much on their chest and it being to do with not getting optimal air, so in effect too long in the car seat can suffocate them..

3. The ones where you just pull the seatbelt through tend to be universal, the one with isofix base and all that jazz might not fit in everything.. We had a maxi cosi, my OH tends to swap cars every other week with him not having a fixed car with being in the taxi industry.. Our car seats tend to be fine in any car..

4. I think the whole travel system is pointless unless you're going to get something decent.. I regretted wasting my money on something cheap ish just because it had all the options.. Eventually all you're going to need is the seat bit and the rest of it it's a waste of money.. If I know i'd had atleast two babies and knew about this prior I'd like my sil would've bought a silvercross or something but I didn't...

5. No but I have experience with kiddicare's own which ended up being a nightmare waste of money!

6. Do look and have a look at them have a feel and put the weight of about 10kg's in to see how it pushes it once baby gets bigger!

Oh and the Joie car seat, the one that's from birth to 4.. It's a bag of shit too.. My little one screams in it when we just go round the corner! It's a joke!

There are several different Joie seats that are all suitable from birth to 4. Also, some babies do scream in car seats, it's not necessarily the seat, your baby may not like any car seats.

Trust me it's that seat, at some point he was fine but now he's squashed and he just can't get comfy, with 2,5 they can let you know and opposed to the one I have at my moms I'm 100% it's the seat..

http://www.mothercare.com/Joie-Stages-Group-0-,-1-and-2-Car-Seat/859259,default,pd.html

It's that one.. He was always content in his maxicosi too.. That's why I'm really 110% sure!!

I think it's the arm straps, you can't put them higher without taking the head part up and by doing that it completely changes the structure of the seat, he's forever letting us know he's uncomfy and wants to get out!

I would advise going to some shops and having a look and a push of some pushchairs to see how they feel. Some that look great online can be awkward to push. We also made a list of the things that were vital to us and the things that were more of a preference. X

That makes more sense JD :)

I liked the look of the Joie stages, but may try the i-anchor or isofix instead.

I heard about the maxi cosi priory being a comfy good seat according to some around here, the straps look easier to adjust, not sure about rear facing though! and my driving instructor has that one!
