Practice contractions?

I awoke about 1.30 am two nights ago with what felt like period pains and some tensing of my tummy. I also had a backache, lower in my back. There were no real patterns of coming and going, but more of a permanent ache and definate "contraction" type feelings. They weren't too painful but I called the hospital. The MW said could be early labour and to have a bath, which I did. I really thought things were happening (37 weeks last Thurs) and was so ready as I am soooo uncomfortable, but after trying to get off to sleep (and being woken every couple of hours with a bit of pain) the pains went. Yesterday I was fine, and today, although I feel a little tired, no tummy pains at all.

Not sure what these were? Any ideas..... I was thinking braxton hicks, although I have read these should not hurt. Then I thought practice labour? False alarm?

Any advice or views ladies?

Thanks for your rapid reply Midna - that is reassuring. My poor OH was very frightened. He now says he doesn't think he is fully prepared for the baby coming or me going through the pain. I have tried to reassure him I will be fine and we will get through it etc. But of course, BIG life change.

I guess we have 9 months to get used to it. Until it actually happens, maybe it doesn't really sink in with men!!

My mum also said labour pains are 10 times worse than period pain type contractions. Thanks Mum!!

try to think that every pain will be doing something.. your body has a lot to do in order to deliver the baby

I have to admit my labour contractions were NOTHING like the practising that had been going on for weeks before... nor like the ones I've been having on and off for the past few days... When they are regular and I can time more than 3 in an hour... THEN I'll go to hospital...
