This will be the millionth thread on here re PT!

My lb is 3 on feb 1st. He’s shown ZERO interest in the potty or pants or anything toilet related until the other night. We had regularly tried to encourage him to sit on his potty (esp every night after bath), first he’d either say no or sit on with clothes but in the last few weeks had been happy sat on it nude for 10 mins.

Then by some miracle on sat after bath he did his first wee in it and then another at his Nanny’s today.

I’m conscious we’ve not started with the typical training I hear about (no nappy, staying in house for days etc). Is this more casual approach ok as well and will we have to do the more strict training moving forward?

He’s been so against it so we have been cautious not to push him and now wondering if we should take his lead? Thanks x

Sounds fine to me. You’re happy, he’s happy- what’s not to like? We’ve sat DS on the potty at bath time pretty much since he was able to sit! Not because we thought he was ready for potty training, just to get him used to it. I imagine ours will start like yours has. Speaking in general terms (I know everyone’s different and there are bound to be some exceptions) the people I’ve known whose kids don’t start till 3-3.5 are the ones who have fewer accidents and the kids “get it” quicker if that makes sense? I’m lazy and can’t be arsed with any more washing than is absolutely necessary so I’m hoping the later we leave it, the less likelihood of accidents and hopefully the whole thing will be over and done with quickly and easily (we live in hope!) xx

Thanks mylullaby that’s reassuring! I’ve heard same about older ones having fewer accidents so fx. I guess eventually he’ll start using it more and not liking the feeling of wet nappies? Xx

We didn't really potty train as such, like you we encouraged our daughter to use it, didn't push it when she wasn't having a go & one day she just started using it. Sort of baby led potty training.. if that's a thing? lol same with getting her to poo on the toilet, left it to her, she did it when she was ready. X

My son is 3 18th Feb and we're doing the same thing. For the last 6-8 weeks he's been using the potty at bath time/get ready for bed time and he confidently does a wee every night then we wash hands and say bye bye to the wee in the toilet. I've tried introducing it in the morning, but he won't enetertain the idea so I'm not going to push as it'll only upset us both. My health visitor said lots of children aren't potty train until 3.5 years but I still feel the pressure as lots of my fried had theirs done at 2 yrs. I think you're doing great the way you are.

we are potty training my 3 yr old son too. he literally told me no and that he didn't want to. But he can do EVERYTHING. I knew he could toilet train too. I just decided one day that enough was enough and put him on every 10 minutes. once he started going, he was fine! I gave him chocolate chips as a reward hahaha!

Thanks Elizabeth. I’m pretty confident my son would refuse if I tried this annoyingly! Going to leave it I think until my newborn has settled (fx) and maybe tackle him with bribes then?! I’ve offered a bribe now for doing a poo and it still didn’t work. So we haven’t progressed from his nightly potty wee before bath time. Frustrating! x
