When you make up a bottle of formula the powder tends to increase the voulme of the liquid by about an oz I have noticed. So do you count the ounces before or after you've added the powder.

We gave LO a bottle other night and OH said how much is in there ... I said 4 oz (cos I started with 4oz of water and then added 4 scoops) but of course it looked more like 5oz. OH said, no it's 5 oz... but I thought it was 4oz.

So how do you then work out how much they've drunk? Do you class as 4oz and just think if baby has drunk 2.5 oz then really she's drunk 2 oz??? Very confusing...
Please help us settle our little query. Thanks.

i always went by the amount of water i put in to begin with, so 4oz as thats what it says on tin, and i class that as baby has drunk 4oz even if it looks more like 5 after powder has been added.

I asked my hv this once and she said yes the powder does bunk it up a bit to carry on making the feeds up as normal. No harm to the baby.

You measure the water, so you start out with four ounces of water and add four scoops of formula, you will end up with five ounces, but it is counted as four. I know this may seem wierd, but that is the way you do it.

absolutely.. let's not forget that IS the most important thing!!

i was thinking the exact same thing the other day, made up some 7oz bottles, looked at them ad they had turned into 8oz lol  :rotfl:

i never thought about it really but i must admit i'd be inclined to say its what the finished bottle has in it actually.

sys on the tin to add a scoop of powder to every oz of water, so i pour 7oz in bottle the add 7 scoops

Whatever oz of water is started with is what the bottle started at regardless of what adding powder takes it to, and what is left is minus what original water oz was, that sounds soooooooooooo complicated

I was thinking about this the otherday lol...how very strange
