Hi Everyone,

Lovely to meet you all.

My name is Kiri, I'm 28 years old from Kent. Recently got married and purchased my first home (glutton for punishment, as decided to do them both at the same time... stressed was an understatement!!!!)

My husband an I had an unexpected pregnancy a couple of years ago, but unfortunately I miscarried early on. This has made me a little nervous about trying to conceive this time.

We plan on beginning to try to conceive in the New Year or maybe a bit before, but I need to determine whether I need to be on prescription Folic Acid for a little while beforehand and for how long leading up to attempting to conceive.

I look forward to being part of this forum and getting to know people :)

Kiri x

Hi Sorry to hear about your MC. I'm also 28 and just came off the pill. We are waiting until AF arrives after my withdrawal bleed from pill and then will be ttc, although hubby doesn't want to know when I'm ovulating and wants to take a more relaxed approach. I'm not sure how long il be relaxed about it though haha. I started taking folic acid on Wednesday after coming off the pill on Tuesday. The nurse I spoke to at my last pill appointment said that I can start trying whenever but to start taking folic acid as soon as possible so that it gets into my system. Good luck on your ttc journey

Hi! :)

Yes, my husband is the same, he doesn't want to 'plan' it as such. I am waiting until my discussion with the doctor tomorrow regarding FC before coming off the pill. Could be a couple of months of prescription supplementation before we can start trying, but fingers crossed it's sooner. It's a bit of a bugger the FC as it doesn't store within the body, so it constantly needs to be topped up, so cannot be having any of it zapped out during pregnancy.

Good luck on your ttc journey too!

Welcome to PF.

Congrats on your wedding,!
Good luck with your journey: :) this forum helped me alot!
Any reason you need to be on prescription folic acid? Sorry about you mc :( x

You may not need a prescription for folic acid. I just take the seven seas trying for a baby and they have all the folic acid you need. They also have other vitamins in them and iron as well. You can just buy folic acid on its own as well if you would prefer.

Thank you! :)

I had a GP appointment yesterday, who agreed that I need to go on prescription folic acid once I've conceived. Didn't really want to progress any further with TTC until this was discussed with my GP and decided whether I needed to or not. Want to try everything possible not to have another MC.

After the MC a couple of years back, my folic acid levels dropped so low that I required prescribed FC for a few months to bring my levels back to a stable level, that would be easily maintained through diet. Just needed that bump back up. My GP was unsure if the FC and MC were linked, but to err on the side of caution, suggested it wise that I get more than the 400mg supplements. I am currently on 400mg until conception, but once I am pregnant I need to start the higher dosage.

So, it looks like all systems go!

You need to be on a higher dose before you get pregnant. I was also on high dose folic acid which I was taking for a year before I got my daughter. I would go back and see your gp. X
