My Oh has been told that he in entitled to one week paternity leave? Is this right?. I thought it was two?

yes it's two, but most places only pay the stat paternity pay rate.

i *think* he is entitled to two, i don't think it's up to the company to decide if he can only take 1 week, 2 or none at all.

it does depend on how long he's worked with the company though. he needs to have been working there since before you were pregnant.

Mmm thanks girls. He hasnt been in employment long. Its with the fire service. He's been employed since the start of Oct I think and I fell pregnant around the 5th Oct. I just assumed he would get 2 weeks but he asked yesterday and was told one week

Just spoken to my husband who writes the policies for the prison service including parternity pay.

Statuoury paternity pay is 2 consequtive weeks which works out as 10 working days. If for example you are a fireman and you work a week on week off then you would still only get the two consequetive weeks, you can't split it.

My husband gave the example of prison officers who work 7 days and 7 days off, they will get the 7 days as they miss out on the second week as they are off anyway. However, you can ask for extra paid special leave and you may or may not be given it.

However the link on this page details it all, and you can always ask for the policy pertaining to parternity leave from your husbands work.

Also is he going to take some holiday along with it as well, to bump it up a bit? Good luck

Go straighht to the human resources section of the fire service hun then.

If it's classed that he started working there after you fell pregnant, then they are being good giving him just 1 week off.

if he started before you got pregnant, then he's entiltled to two weeks.

Many thanks for that, I will have a look just now. He is 4 days on, 4 days off and has been told that he will get the 4 days

I think shifts muck up paternity pay what a pain in the backside! Hope it gets resolved soon so you both know exactly where you stand.

just wanted to mention something. if he a firefighter?
if so a friend of mine whose husband is a firefighter put his newborn on his dirty well used uniform.

It was such a powerful picture, this vulnerable newborn baby on this firefighter's uniform.

i'll see if i can find it and pm it you :) it's not my pic so i wouldn't want to post it on a public forum :)

DH can get 2 weeks but he only gets 3 days full pay out of this. From asking him he's going to take the first week as 3 days paternity and 2 days unpaid then the second week as annual leave.

I think like the others said it's all dependent on how long you have been with your employer. My OH has been with his a while so he can have up to 2 months but only the first 2 weeks is paid.

Did he not get an employee handbook or something with details of paternity/sick pay etc when he joined?

Holy **** - please tell me you OH works for an IT company that me & DH can join for Bubba 2! My DH has qualified for the longest available leave because he's been there over 12 months.

It also depends on company policy. My OH can have 10 days paternity leave but only of them are paid. If he wants any more he will need to take annual leave. It's pretty standard I think plus the emergency services policies are rubbish.
