ive been allergic to anything derived from opium - tramadol codeine, pethidine etc all my life.

hat the fook am i going to do when in labour?!?!?!?!

gas and air!!!!!!! maybe a birth pool? and possibly an epidural???

You'll be fine hun! Pethidine is not a very nice drug (IMO) as it passes through to the baby so i wouldn't use it anyway.

Gas and air is supposed to be good stuff.
TENS machines may ease early contractions
Water is good at pain relief!

And an epidural if your in hospital..

Well, you may surprise yourself and do just fine without such heavy pain relief. I'm a great believer in mind over matter, but then I accept its not for everyone.

I used a TENS machine in the first stage, birth pool, breathing techniques and a bit of Entinox while in there (gas and air) and also for the final big push to help with the breathing and pushing.

Never felt like I needed anything stronger. Nor was it available mind you as I was at home  , but I never felt I could not cope with the contractions and worked through them each time.

Water is an excellent pain reliver FWIW. And if you deliver in hospital, as BabyBee said an epi is always an option.

Hi, I don't often post on here, but couldn't walk away from this.

Your GP or midwife should have already referred you to see the anaesthetist at the hospital already!!!!! I can't believe they haven't done this.

I'm also allergic to all sorts of painkillers, so I had to go and see the anaesthetist at about 32 weeks to run through exactly what I could and couldn't have. It was all very carefully noted, and the consultation took well over an hour. There's a whole separate section in my notes on pain relief now.

You really need to push to see someone about it - speak to your GP!!!!

Unfortunately the only way to be 100% sure what you can have is to talk to the medical people.

I agree with babybee though, not having pethadine is no big lose, from what i've read about it it's negatives well out way possitives for me, and i dont want any pain releif that can pass over placenta and affect Tally, so gas and air it is

have to agree with this, my friend (due the same day as me,) has a family history of bad reactions to epidurals etc, she needed to see an anaethetist and consultant incase an emergecy section is needed.

best speak to your mw asap to get an appointment arranged to discuss alternatives hun
