I've been looking at options for pain relief during labour and am now more concerned than I was about it. I've had HG my entire pregnancy (currently 25 weeks) and currently am severely underweight, have VERY low blood pressure, and low iron, not to mention the constant nausea, vomiting and generally feeling like death.

Then I read that virtually all of the typical pain med options can cause vomiting and some cause a drop in blood pressure...Quite honestly I'm concerned at this point that my body won't be able to take it. Its my first pregnancy so I don't know what the labour pains will really feel like or my threshold for them. I've also never had an operation, so don't know how I'll react to anything like morphine or anesthetic drugs. The closest I've been on is codine, which basically knocked me out, but didn't give me a great deal of actual pain relief.

Can anyone share their experiences with HG or low blood pressure and labour?

Hi I had hg with my first pregnancy and blood pressure was always on the low side of normal (around 60/110). Has the sickness eased at all for you yet? I did start feeling better towards end of second trimester and by third trimester only threw up once a day, hope things improve for you its a horrid thing to go through. Anyhoo my labor was totally fine,I nevee threw up once. Had the diamorphine twice and never made me feel sick or anything, was brilliant stuff lol. Had the gas and air and that personally didnt make me feel sick either but it also had no effect as pain relief so I gave up with it quite quick. Everyone deals with labor pains different so I really wouldn't worry about how it will be,no matter how it goes you will get through it and it will all be worth it when baby is here. For me personally the labor pains were more like strong period pains for the most part so the first 8 hours I got away with just sitting in the bath,no pain relief
When they got stronger I asked for the diamorphine which was a brilliant relief but doesnt last long and by the time I had to push it had wore off anyway. You'll find what works best for you and just go with your gut. wishing you all the best for rest of pregnancy and delivery xx

My bp went sky high during labour so not sure how relavant my comment will be but I had gas/air and pethadine and they gave me the anti sickness jab, after I had that I felt fine in terms of sickness so remember that is an option. They do monitor you a lot so try not to worry and if you can go with the flow then I would as I think it can be less stressful if you don't have a fixed plan.

I had pethidine and they give an antisickness along side, I felt fine x

Something I had when I was in labour caused me to be violently sick. It was either the pethidine or the gas and air. It was most unpleasant. I had some antiemetics but they were a bit late. If you do choose to have some pain relief, ask them for the injection to stop you vomiting.

Thanks for your replies ladies. Currently I've had a bad reaction to some antiemetics and docs don't think my body can take another bad reaction, so I'm not sure they'd be willing to give me the anti sickness jab. I'm not so concerned about being sick during labour but I'm concerned about that on top of the current strain on my body, and my low blood pressure is really worrying me with regards to medications. I'm feeling the worst I've felt the entire pregnancy so far, its certainly not easing off. I was told my low blood pressure does contribute to this (88/46). I'm sure it will all be fine in the end but at this point I'm just trying to plan ahead a bit to distract myself!

I'm allergic to morphine so I just had gas and air and then I had to have the epidural after that . I did have the induction drip though which I heard can make them more painful. xx
