Hi

So we have had a couple of girls names picked out for a while now - we like Poppy and Isla.

We have been really struggling for boys names, and it seemed like every name I suggested, hubby didn't like. The other week I suggested Finlay, which I really like, but hubby said that he didn't want a name that would get shortened.

Today he has suggested that we just call the baby Finn if it's a boy, so that then the name can't be shortened. I see his point, because I don't like it when people don't call their children by their actual names, but I figure that if we like both Finn and Finlay, then it doesn't really matter.

Anyway, my question is, does Finn sound like an odd name to christen a baby? Is it a bit grown up? We have also toyed with the idea of Will, rather than William, for the same reason, but again, I'm worried it sounds a bit grown up for a baby!

I'm kind of hoping for a girl now, at least there would be no stressing about names!!x

I don't think Finn sounds too grown up - Baby Finn :)

I think Finn is quite a cool name, I also like William...

...but then I am no help. We have exactly the same problem. Girls names I can think of loads, but boys we are finding stupidly tough!

I love Finn. And it's a bit less common than Finlay xx

Oh and my cousin did a similar thing - her boy is Zach full name rather than Zachary

I love Finn, its a great name. I think people might always assume its short for Finlay though and you'll be say 'no just Finn' xx

Yes that's what I thought, which is why I thought it might be better to christen the baby Finlay instead. But i do really like Finn as a name on its own. It's soo hard! x

I know a baby born last week called Finn David maxwell. He's a wee cutie. It's quite Irish. Also know a little boy called will and he's adorable and his birth certificate is simply will.
P.s poppy is our name for a girl too!! And Rory for a boy
X

I prefer Finn on its own to Finlay. I think it's a great idea.

Oh thank goodness for that! I really like it, but I think because it's not very common, I was worried it was not nice if that makes sense. It's good to get some other people's opinions, I know you ladies will be honest! xx

I love poppy, I think we prefer it to Isla, but it's good to have 2 names just in case baby doesnt look like a poppy (or a Finn!) xx

I agree Finn is a gorgeous name and I personally prefer it to Finlay xxx

I love the name Finn! If we have a girl we are calling her poppy...just love the name. But like you we can't decide on boys names... Don't know why its so hard for a boys name loll xx

You're all making me feel so much better. I know it shouldn't matter if other people don't like your names, as long as you like them, but it does make me feel happier!

Alicia - I was stressing about having a boys name so much, and convinced it would be my luck that we would get to the due date and still have no name. I think boys names are harder because girls names are prettier but you can't have a pretty boys name! xx

I prefer Finlay just because it sounds cuter :) but I prefer will on it's own to william xxx
