I have read so many websites and so much info on weaning and im still so confused so ive basically come on here as everyone has been so helpful before and its so much nicer to hear it from experience, this is truely my last hope please help me.

My baby is just over 5 months old. She has had a few spoonfuls of baby rice now and then and seems to like it. Now i dont know what to do lol. When she reaches 6 months what do i give her? When people say solids does this mean baby rice, is this a solid? Or does solids mean like proper food? im confused as to whether ive started weaning or not as she has had baby rice already.
And i dont understand about how much milk she should be having when she starts solids. At the moment she has 4x 240ml bottles of formula a day so when does that start reducing? Ive also read things about servings i.e 2-4 servings, but what is a serving??? a spoonful? a bowlful? And when should she stop having a bottle and go onto a cuppie thing for her milk, should she have a bottle after 6 months??
Ive read so many different things im so confused its sounds ridiculous but im just at a complete loss and dont know where to start with anything. I dont even know what milk to give her after 6 months as she has sma gold which is 0-12 months but then sma do a follow on milk for 6 months onwards so like does she come off the gold??? why do they do a 0-12 months AND a 6 months onwards?? I just dont know what to give her!
I read on the hipp website about giving pureed chicken but how do you puree a chicken?? i dont have a blender and if i did i cant imagine putting a solitary bit of chicken in a huge blender thing there would be nothing left of it! I sound like a lunatic.

Please help anyone

I hope this will be of some help -

When they say solids... they really mean - Solids. Bits of carrot... a piece of apple, some pasta, bread sticks, toats, cerial - wetabix etc. Litterally anything you eat, baby eats!! :)

Or you can buy jars/puree your own food and feed LO your self, its really up to you. I do abit of both, a proper (jarred  ) meal of an evening so I know hes getting some food, then sarnie etc for lunch, and cerial/toast for breakkie. It honestly is up to you how or what you want to feed your baby.

if I were you, id grab a few fruit jars, and enjoy watching LO's face at the flavours etc :) Then hand her a piece of pear, or banana etc and see what she thinks to it, see what she does... mine scrached his ear with it 1st piece of fruit he got!!

Id start with a few table spoons full, then move onto whatever LO wants... she might be a little pigglet and lap it up straight away!! Dont worry if she dosent eat to much though! Food Before One Is Just For Fun!! :D

Dont lower her intake of milk (though she may do this of her own accord - so long as weight is going on, you are doing great) I cant answer about what milk to use... were on prescription milk so I dont know whats in the supermarket, and I dont know whats good!!

dont stress

it does feel like a bit of a minefield getting started! are you a member of a library? i found it really helpful to borrow a book on weaning but the main draw back is that most of the advice about weaning relates to purees which are suitable from 4 months. It will still be able to help reassure you about quantity and frequency of solids and milk feeds.

Current advice is that you should wait as close as possible to six months in which case babies don't need to start out with purees as they have already developed the ability to deal with lumpier food. Have you considered baby led weaning? There is a lot of fab advice in the BLW blog thread and you should definitely have a looky in there to see what's going on.

Also, i just got a pack this week for signing up with HIPP and there was a lot of useful info in there as well as a few samples and coupons.

First thing, don't panic. A baby's main source of nutrition still comes from milk until they are one.

If your baby is happy on baby rice then you can move onto something more substantial. You could now try either some pureed fruit or veg (anything will do) or you don't even have to puree it and could look at a different approach to weaning called Baby Led Weaning. There is a really informative thread on this in the feeding & nutrition section.

Yes weaning has commenced!

Don't reduce her milk yet, not until she is established on three balanced meals a day. Normally the mid morning milk feed is the next one to be dropped, the key thing is to ensure that she is having between 16 - 20 oz of milk a day.

Just follow you baby's lead. She will let you know when she's had enough. A good idea is to make your purees in icecube trays. Lots of books refer to 'cubes' as the measurement. MAybe just start her on 2 or 3 and see how she goes.

Lots of people introduce a cup at lunchtime as a way to encourge LO to drink water (as once the mid morning milk feed is dropped then you need to ensure LO is having fluids). I *think* the idea is that once LO reaches one then you should be giving milk in a cup, as once they have teeth bottles can contribute to tooth decay.

You can carry on with SMA gold but some people prefer to move onto a follow on milk as it contains more iron. A baby is born with a natural reserve of iron which depletes at six months - hence why some change to a follow on milk. Its entirely your choice though.

Yes to puree a chicken you cook it first and then literally blast in with a blender (no bones though!)

I can really recommend the Gina Ford Little Book of Weaning, even if you don't follow her other routines the weaning book is great as it tells you exactly what to give at what stage, for both milk and solids.

Hope that helps

Thanks alot for the detailed replies. I guess i will just have to see what happens and see how she gets on with things. I gave her a rusk yesterday hehe she got in a right mess but seemed to love it. I think i will still wait until she is 6 months before trying her with too much else. She seems generally happy with her milk at the minute. I cant wait to see her reactions though when she has other foods. Thanks again for any help.
