I am a theatre nurse and I was very innocently walking into recovery to hand over a patient and the nurses in there had borrowed an ultrasound machine and they were trying to use it on one another. Now I have to stress that this machine was borrowed to look at a patient's arteries so not designed for babies but they all started saying they wanted to try it out on my baby so we snuck into a quiet corner and more and more people started to gather and someone stuck the probe on my tummy and up came the baby! We couldn't find its legs or body because we are all amateurs but we found the head and we saw the eyes and heartbeat and we saw the hands clapping, waving and baby sucking its thumb! In the end, about 20 people were gathered round all cooing and getting excited - it was great fun!

I too work in theatre (mainly in the recovery though) and it sounds like you all had fun. One of the girls said we should borrow the doppler in a few weeks to see if we could find babies heart beat but i want to wait till i've heard it with the midwife first.
