Hi,

Im getting a little worried. I give Antonio expressed breast milk during day & aptimil easy digest or hungry baby at night plus a couple of feeds from the breast but he struggles to get through 4oz and hes 8 weeks tomorrow! ive been reading other people's posts on here and it seems that other babies that are Antonio's age seem to be getting through 5-6oz every couple of hours. He's been stuck on 4oz or less for the last 3 weeks. How can i try & get him to take more?

We currently use stage 1 teat on his bottles, if i were to change to stage 2 teat do you think that would help? Maybe becuase hes taking so long with his feeds on stage 1 teat hes just getting bored hence not drinking?

Also, if i changed to stage 2 teat for his bottle would that cause problems with me breastfeeding? someone said to me that hed become to lazy on the breast if he has stage 2 teat.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks

T xx

Didn't want to read and run - but really not sure what to suggest.
Would definitely speak to your HV though - as long as he is gaining weight I wouldn't sorry about how much he is taking - all babies are different

toggy , has anyone spoken to you about what to expect from a prem baby ? you have to keepo reminding your self he should only be 3 weeks old , leland is only just gone on to 6oz but he was a much bigger baby !

Hi G3M,

No, no-one has spoken to me regarding what to expect with a prem baby, but......im really happy right now, ive just sterilised a stage 2 teat and fed Antonio, he took a whopping 5oz!  looked like he wanted more but i dont want to overload him lol maybe i should try his 10pm feed and give 6oz?

I'm certainly no expert but as long as he's gaining weight nicely then it shouldn't really matter how many ounces he takes per feed. I wouldn't compare your baby with anyone elses either. :D Every baby is different.

If you feed babies breast and formula, you don't really ever know much breast milk they have guzzled. My LO hardly ever drinks more than an ounce or two of formula top up which proves that he is getting mostly breast milk. As others have said, if they don't put on weight then it is a cause of concern.
