Hi

I think I read somewhere that it's best to wait 3 months before putting the baby in a room with a newly fitted carpet.

Did I dream this or does anyone else know any more about what the guidelines are?

Thanks

Lucy

 aint got a clue hun sorry, i did read some where about paint but not carpets? cant see why carpets would be a prob??? my house has 1month old carpet all upstairs :?

Yes its the same advice as the paint thing. i thought it was about 2/3 months for both? could be wrong.

its all because of the fumes. you know that yummy new carpet smell - (wel i love it anyway  ) well its all fumy like the paint smell so they advise not to put babies in a room for a while if its had new carpets/paint.

take care

xx

Ooops, i brought Charlie home to brand new carpet! I have never heard not to have new carpet????

theres lots of speculation about what u should an shouldnt do, back in the day my great nan had 10 children an they didn't have all this then, i think people worry to much and yes im one of them worriers! i went with laminate floor all in my house part from the stairs cos i suffer from ashtma, thought it would help but my son now has asthma an suffers quite bad.

id never heard of this before id heard of paint but not carpet ours went down about 3 monthss before i had B

We've only just finished Ruby's bedroom and had a new carpet put down a week ago. Wanted to put her in her new room when shes about 6 months. Thats in roughly 4 weeks. I hope it'll be ok. I honestly didnt know about new carpets!!!! :!: :!: :!:

Hi again

Sorry if this caused concern to any of you, I can't seem to find any guidelines online. I think I read it in a pregnancy magazine whilst I was pregnant but having looked through all the ones I have kept it isn't in any of them.

I'm sure if the rooms are well ventilated it'll be fine

Found this...

Carpeting

In an effort to modernize and quiet down classroom noise many schools now use rugs. However, there is more to carpeting than meets the eye. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by carpet backings and adhesives have been blamed for health problems ranging from nausea to skin irritation.
Synthetic glues and fibers release toxic chemical fumes contributing to indoor air problems. Studies involving carpet installation workers have determined higher levels of leukemia, central nervous system damage, lung, oral, and testicular cancers.
Even small amounts of fumes can cause serious health problems. One study of mice exposed to carpet fumes developed abnormalities of their respiratory, neuromuscular and neurological systems. Many died, and autopsies found kidney damage and lesions in the liver and brain. It didn’t matter if the carpeting was brand new, or twelve years old!5
To further illustrate the serious health risks associated with carpeting, insurance companies are reluctant to grant life insurance to rug installers, who must first sign a release against future cancers developed down the road.
There are several things to be aware of concerning carpeting: 1) the glues, latex backings, and rubber padding are all toxic and off-gas, 2) pesticides used to control carpet beetles may include arsenic and benzene, 3) carpets become reservoirs for tracked in pesticides, heavy metals, and other toxins.6

AND...

Children and babies spend a great deal more time in close contact with carpeted interiors than do lab mice. This maybe another environmental assault on the health of children growing up in industrialized nations where petrochemicals dominate.

That's ok hun, someones got to fit those nursery carpets,he's brave :D xx

If we listened to everything we hear that is 'bad' for our babies, we would all go mental with worry. I don't listen to any of it, we can't all go round ripping our carpets up.

You're absolutely right!! However, I'm one of these sad people that take great interest in this kind of stuff.

I'm not overly obsessed, but I choose to avoid where I can, eg. deodarants, artificial juice, processed foods (excl. Tunnocks teacakes) :D , any air freshners/insect repellents, to name a few. But I avoid these in my own home... I will always find a natural alternative if possible! But if I was to visit you, I wouldn't make a fuss and enjoy your home and surroundings.

I think I fell on my head when I was little.... been fussy since I can remember. The rest of my family thinks I'm off my rocker  , but like I say, I'm discreet with my reasonings and don't force it upon anyone else.

I think the carpet thing concerned Lucy - I don't think anyone should worry about it now if it wasn't their concern before. Most homes I know have carpets - mine included.
