Think this is delivering the placenta. Whether you want to do it naturally or have an injection just as baby is born. X

thanks hun.
what does the injection do? xxx

Speeds up the process I'm sure. Think if you opt for naturally then it can take up to an hour? Again not entirely sure ( someone may know better) as I ended up with a section but on my birth plan I did say I wanted the injection for the placenta xxx

thank you! think i am going to have the injection!!xxx

Yep the injection speeds the process up and the placenta is delivered quicker than if you wait for it to happen naturally. However...I had the injection and as the doctor was pulling the placenta out the umbilical cord snapped and the placenta was left inside me! Cue 15 mins of the doctor trying to remove it (thankfully I'd had local anaesthetic on my lady parts as I'd had to have an episiotomy) and me having to push it out otherwise they'd have had to take me down to theatre!! Sorry, not trying to scare you and I think it's rare for this to happen but forewarned is forearmed!!

Oh gosh that's frightened me now !! Xx

I had injection with both mine was really quick I just felt a bit of tugging

I had the injection but for whatever reason I had a retained placenta and it wouldn't come out so I had to have it manually removed in theatre. . Xx again not trying to scare you just making you aware xx

I had the injection with both and never even felt the placenta coming out. X

I did a lot of research and decided to 'see how it went on the day' as I wanted a natural birth. The injection for managed 3rd stage kind of negate the whole 'natural' aspect if you have done the hard part drug free but I wasn't against the injection. I just wanted to see how it went.

Anyhoo.... on the day I ended up on the drip and had some diamorphine. Delivery took 2 hours so I had no say in the matter (they needed placenta out to check it as it can show if bub was starved of oxygen)

It was fine, I don't recall the injection or delivering placenta.. All I recall is Dr checking baby over (so baby and OH were across the room) and the two MW's examing placenta on the foot of my bed whilst I was sat up watching !! I'll never eat liver again !!

xxxxxxxx

I wanted natural but is ended up with the injection due to my high pulse rate during the pushing stage and a jittery midwife!!

The pros are that it's over with very quickly (I barely even felt mine deliver, if she hadn't told me I wouldn't of known) and I think you bleed less when you have it (though unproven evidence - mainly from my mums 30+ years as a midwife - she thinks later bleeding can be reduced if you've had a natural 3rd stage). There can be side effects from it such as nausea etc (I didn't have any though) that a lot of women put down to side effects from the labour usually. Also, even though it's quicker to deliver, when your lying there with your baby in your arms... You won't care :-) staring at their little features takes up so much time, an hour will pass before you know it!

If you've had a natural drug free labour, I'd say try for a natural placenta delivery (why mess with nature if you haven't had to already?), that was my intention anyway :-)

I had the injection, by the time I'd given birth I just wanted everything out! & the relief after delivering the placenta was immense, if it had stayed in longer than necessary I wouldn't have been able to relax & enjoy meeting my baby for the first time x

Thanks everyone :-)

If you have a retained placenta wouldn't it have not come out either way? Do even if you did have natural it still wouldn't have come out would it? Xxx

You can't have a retained placenta if you have a natural third stage as its the drugs in the injection which cause the uterus to contract, either releasing the placenta or not!

You can have a retained placenta with a natural third stage, in fact it's slightly more likely. I wouldn't worry too much about that when choosing between the two options though as there is nothing you can do about it and not that likely to happen to you x

I had the injection and would for future babies. You''re so full of love and endorphins that you dont really remember the third stage. It was delivered quickly, pain free (its nothing compared to a baby lol) and intact. My leg hurt the following day where they injected me but that's about it.

The placenta is a crazy ass looking thing but I remember the midwife telling me I had a beautiful placenta (erm, thanks for that) and asking if I was okay about it being used for research as it was very healthy looking at 2 weeks overdue. xx

I've had the injection with all mine all fine appart from my last which ended in retained placenta and having to be rushed to theatre which was a horrific experience which is worrying me for this time I just don't know what to do il be speaking to my consultant in detail about it cos I know the closer I get the more worried I will become , it's hard to know what to do for the best x
