Nappy rash

Daniel had the worst nappy rash of his life a couple of weeks ago. We had to see the GP and he was given Canesten and Metanium to use until the rash disappeared. Well, the bumpiness went pretty quickly, but the rash marks were still there, so we used both creams up until last Friday. Then yesterday his skin went red all over the nappy area (like a normal mild nappy rash), so I put Canesten and Metanium on again. It looked marginally better this morning, so I just put the Metanium on. Then he did a poo and on cleaning him up I noticed two patches where the skin's completely broken down and has started to bleed!

Is that from using both those creams for over a week? Does anyone have experience of that? My daughter used to get nappy rashes that were all over red, followed by bleeding skin, but my son never has. Do you think it's because the skin's been weakened by the previous rash? I'm not even sure what cream to use as the Metanium says not to use on broken/bleeding skin.

Did the gp do a swab? Canestan is used if it's a thrush/fungal nappy rash. My daughter had a very bad fungal nappy rash and I eventually needed to see a dermatologist who prescribed 3 seperate creams. It took a long time to clear up but we got there. A swab would be helpful if one hasn't already been done because then you'd know if it was a fungal nappy rash you were actually dealing with. As a side note it may be the metanium worsening the rash rather than the canestan. Yellow metanium is too strong for my daughter and she gets a chemical burn looking rash. White metanium is something I use every nappy change now though and find it works wonders.

We've only had it that bad once. I just used matanium.. (whatever its called in the yellow tube) practically dabbed his bum when cleaning.. I applied the cream every time we changed and it cleared within about 4 days. other than when we have a nappy rash, I use sudocrem care and protect normally. x

Thanks for your replies. We'd been using the yellow Metanium, but I popped the white one on this morning as his bottom looked a bit better (i.e. just a bit red in patches, no bumps etc.). After the nappy change where I noticed the broken skin I used Sudocrem. Hmm, maybe it's the prolonged use of the yellow Metanium? Certainly the nursery used heaps of it (even though I wrote "very small amount" half of the tube was gone by the end of two days!).

I went through all this with Jake, even ended up in A&E because the GP just couldn't help him no matter what we tried and all the creams were just making it worse, I was given a paste at the hospital and it's amazing stuff, it's called orabase paste, just wash his bum with some warm water, dry it and paste this all over the sore part every time you change him, it works really fast x
