Names and popularity.

I called my daughter Constance after my gran and great gran but i liked it aswell as it is un-common. I have heard a few Connies but not Constance as yet!

Even if it were common i would still of gone with it x

redbear i might have missed a post somewhere where you're talking about a particular name. but the way i read it (and i may be wrong) is that you associate popular names with chav parents?

i hope that isnt the case. i am certainly not a chav and the names i like are popular, mu mum is as far away from chav as you could get and my brother has a very popular name - there were 4 in their class.

as i say, i might have picked itup the wrong way.

I dont think it matters if a name is popular. it certainly doesn't mean the child will be any less original and individual just because their name isnt.

No I mean my daughters middle name is Olivia then I went to baby and toddler and there was this lass there called Olivia, really horrible and now I wish I had picked a different name. There are a few names like that, im sure ive heard that some teachers do the same, wont name there child after the classes 'naughty' child etc just because we associate that name with the child we know. x

Its just personally im not a fan of popular names, because I hated anyone else having my name as a kid Becky, and would change it to Rebecca if there was another lol, think its stuck with me now im older lol x

Ava Elizabeth is lovely. Don't worry about popularity. You could go with something else then that become popular in the years to come so would become irrelevant.

I know Olivia's. One is the daughter if one of my oldest friend and she's not chavvy at all! The other is a girl I know / she's the biggest bitch on the planet but her mum us lovely.

I asked my friends about my chosen names and even though I thought Lucy was really popular dye says there's nobd in the nursery she works.

I liked Alice but my husband said everyone would sing the Roy chubby briwn version of living next door to Alice snd it put me right off. I also liked Cecelia but hubby just won't go for it.

My DD's called Alice no one has sang that to us though, Luckly or id just go her are you fing deaf? Its not the name its the association in my mind, Jessica is a perfectly fine name but was the bully throughout school so I don't like it. Cant help dislike that name if you dislike someone with that name.

I never mentioned chavvy btw they chain smoke and the kids stink of it, and the kids are little buggers, nothing to do with there class. x

Well none of the people I know with Olivia's are like that. Both are anti smoking and professionals.

There's names I just wouldn't touch cos of bully's unfortunately I was bullied by a lot of people in school so it really limits lol.

Yeh I know I loved the name that's why I picked it but its kinda tinged now, I suppose ill get over it when I stop seeing them though, and its not like I ever use her middle name.

I think its just something that sticks with you, there where a few bullies because I was big and had size 10 feet I got a lot of it, and so some names I wouldn't go near. Kelsie is one of them I was even put of Elsie which I liked because it sounded similar, Jessica and Kelly all no go's. Its not the names and im sure there are thousands of lovely Jessicas but all I think of is that bully. xx

For me it was Jacqueline, Kelly, Nicola, michala

I don't like Elsie... I've worked with the elderly a lot and I find it so old! I couldn't immagine a baby called Elsie

I like old names but Ethel is the only on that makes me think of an old lady lol x

It's tricky, isn't it. I would feel slightly put off by it too, however, my sister (rightly) pointed out that she is an Emily, and that is one of the most common names ever, and she has only ever met one other. So it just goes like that sometimes. Ava is a beautiful name. Stick to your guns if you love it x

Thanks everyone. All this fuss over a little girl's name, you just know I'm bound to be cooking a boy in here!!

I think Ava Elizabeth is gorgeous. I think sometimes popularity can depend on areas too, if you don't know any baby avas then that's good might be its a much more popular in another part of the country?

Funny you say that about Amy being v popular in your year, I'm born 85 and was the only Amy in my year all the way through school (went to school in wales). We had 7 Sarahs and 7 Lucy's though.

I'm a Madelaine. Growing up I was the only 'Maddie' in school - right through to college, and even Uni. Now there are swarms of Maddies of many variations. When I was little I was bullied for having a weird name, and sometimes people didn't believe me and would say 'don't be silly, you're name is MAGGIE!' No it's blooming not!

Even though it was hard and frustrating sometimes, I love my name, and really enjoy telling people 'No, that's Madelaine with an A, not Madeline, Not Madeleine, and NOT Maddison!'

There's nothing wrong with the others, I just love my name and am happy to be different. When I do eventually have a child I will gladly give it an uncommon name, which yes may result on some mistakes or being picked on, but I would hope that one day they will feel like I do about it.

Having said that, I wouldn't purposefully name a child an uncommon name purely for that matter, if there was a beautiful name that I loved, I don't think I'd let popularity sway me.

Good luck with choosing x

I didn't want a name everyone one else had, i wanted something for my lo that there wasnt about 5 of in his class at school lol.

We choose Arthur Bruce Lennox :)
