My Chinchilla that is :(

We were just about to go to bed last night, so hubby went to feed our chinchillas, and then he called me to come and have alook. Our dark chinchilla was limping and had obviously hurt one of his back legs.
We took him out to have alook and the poor little thing he'd obviously broken it very badly as his leg was just dangling.

We called our 24 hour vets and they told us to come in, but Neil had had a few beers and couldn't drive so they told us we could come in first thing this morning, but we were to worried that something would happen before then, so said he'd get a taxi.

He got back and said well it only has 2 outcomes, they are gonna take an xray and see if it could be fixed, and if not he would have to be put down, but they would ring us in 2 hours to let us know the results. but we weren't holding out much hope as Neil said the vet took alook and said "oh dear that doesn't look good"

Well I was devestated and worried sick, and was extremely nervous when they phoned back, but luckily the vet told us it is fixable, He'd broke his leg in 2 places and it was quite near the joint, and they said they'd put a splint on it, that will have to be changed regularly, and he's got to stay at the vets until monday evening and then we have to get him a new cage as he has to be seperated from his brother untill it's healed.

I am so relieved I really thought we might lose him, it's gonna cost us a fortune but I am so glad he's gonna be ok.

Aaaaw poor little guy. :( Glad he's ok though...what do you think he did? He'll need some extra rasins for bravery!

About 4 or 5 years ago my chinchilla got a blockage in his gut and it was about £150 to sort it all out!! In the end I had him on his back and was rubbing his tummy to stimulate some sort of movement......he managed to do an ENORMOUS poo and everything was ok after that!

xSuzx, Im so sorry to hear your poor wee chinchilla has broken its leg but im glad it can be fixed thats great news hope he recovers well.

Suzy100 your wee dog is so cute i myself have a yorkie they are so adorable mine is 7 years now, glad to hear ur puppy was ok too.

Well we have quite a big cage with a couple of shelfs and ladders, but the shelfs are the bar sort (we've been meaning to cover them with wood to make them safer) we think that he must have gotten his leg stuck inbetween the bars in one of the shelfs and fallen off obviously braking his leg in the process.

But we're not sure when he did it, we'd cleaned them out earlier in the day and he was jumping around fine, and we never noticed him fall or squeal in pain at all during the day, in fact he didn't really seem in much pain, he hadn't made any noises like he was in pain at all all evening, we only noticed because he was limping when we feed them, he was even eating and drinking.

Not sure howmuch it's all gonna cost yet , but it cost us £105 just to take him to the call out vet last night.
His brothers missing him like mad though bless him.

awww poor little fella :(
going to the vets is so expensive, down here its like £20 just for a conseltation(sp)
aww if his brother misses him now, it means he will be extremly happy when he gets back :)

It's £25 here for a consultation, but I think the treatment price is all inclusive, they said it should take about 6 weeks to mend.

Plus even when we get him back he has to be in a seperate cage, to avoid his brother chewing at his splint, but we gonna put the cages next to each other, and hopefully we will beable to put them back in together once he's better, but that isn't a garrenty (sp) as they could fight, so we we have to reintroduce very carefully.

aww glad everythings ok with him and hes gonna heal. know how it feels with pets even hamsters their apart of the family as far as i can see :)

OH NO he's been chewing his splint off, so the vet now has to operate to put pins in it :(

I'm really worried now, as he'll have to be sedated (and this can be risky enough for chinchillas) plus the vet said on Saturday night that pins don't always take and chinchillas can't always ajust properly to them.

We may have to have him put down if this doesn't work

oh no hunni

try to think positive im sure everything will be alright

Thanks robyn I hope so  .

We'll know more after his operation tomorrow, just glad we have our credit card handy other wise we'd never beable to afford all his treatment in one go.

He's a really lovely pet, very friendly, at least he's in the best place for help, the vet thats treating him is specialised in exotic animals which gives us some confidence.

Oh the poor little fella. I really hope he is ok and that it is fixable.

Thinking of you

oh good luck chinckie!

(I'm not sure if you said what his name is, can I ask what it is?)

Hope he does ok

They don't officially have names, as we just tend to call them to us with little kissy n tutu noises (I must look like a right nutty as I talk to them as people do to babies lol)

BUT that said normally if people asked I call him Delboy and his brother is Rodney. Can you tell which one is the bossy one?

I'm really nervous, Hubby's got to phone the vets after 2pm to see how it all went. I do feel better being able to chat about it here so a big thank you everyone :)

Just to let you all know, we got Delboy back home on Thursday.

The vet was very pleased with his operation, he seems to be doing very well (but then again I'm not a vet so who knows).

He's eating well and moving pretty good too considering, he keeps telling his brother (rodney ) off though as he keeps trying to play with him, but he obviously doesn't want to yet.

He's back at the vets for a check up this morning so hopefully will get some encoraging news.

just thought I'd put a few pics, please excuse their scraggy fur as we can't put a sand bath in yet.

Delboy enjoying a mineral lick.
