Just wondering if everyone is taking multi vitamins?
I havent been because I eat healthily, get plenty fresh air and exercise and generally keep very healthy.
However im just back from an appointment with my midwife where I got a Lecture about the importance of taking them and how there is an increase in babies being born with rickets due to lack of vitamin D and the last trimester is the most important time to take the vits.
My question is do i really need them? I know vit D comes from the sun, so always make a point of going out and spending time in the garden or something when its nice, also as far as im aware your body stores vit D for quite a period of time. I just cant help thinking that i didnt take any vits with my DD and she is perfectly healthy.
Would love to hear your opinions!

We don't get enough good sun in the UK to give us enough vitamin D. Its hard to get from any other source and 5-6 months of the year the sun is not high enough. Babies born after summer, when mum's have been out in the the sun, get lots of vitamin D stored up, but its always worth taking a little extra vitamin D cos in the UK our foods aren't supplemented like in scandinavian countries. I'm taking a pregnancy multivit that had the RDA for fit D in it but you can get just vitD drops I think. SOme also recommend them for use in babies milk after birth.

I'm taking pregnacare as I can't be sure what I'm getting in my diet is enough. In fact I'm almost positive it's not enough. I have to be careful with my iron intake so I don't get anaemic, so I just feel like I'd rather be safe than sorry. My midwife was very strict about vit D as well, so it's probably worth taking a supplement even just for that xx

I'm taking sainsburys own mum to be vits. Been taking them since about 6 months pre conception too & never had any problems with lack of vitamins. I plan on taking them until I finish breastfeeding too xx

I am still taking the pregnacare multi vit but I forget at least twice a week to take it!! I eat pretty well and I am generally active but I just continued after Tri 1 witht he same tablets xx

Oohh... Think I will look into this... I definetley don't get enough of everything I need...xx

I stopped taking multi vits after 12 weeks as they gave me morning sickness and the iron content makes me soooo constipated so I'm super careful with that I eat. A good source of vitamin D is surprisingly in most Kellogs breakfast cerals (I'm an avid label reader). Rice Krispys and All Bran have the highest.
xx

This pisses me off so much!! Who the eff are we supposed to listen to?!

At my early antenatal class, we were told by the mw and the nutritionist that under no circumstances were we to take vitamin D supplements, they gave reasons, which I can't remember now, but they both (separately, might I add) said not to listen to any1 who tells us to take vit d x

I can't stand contradicting information!!

But the way I see it, a bit company like the one that makes pregnacare wouldn't get away with advertising the need for all these vitamins in every single pregnancy magazine if any of it was remotely bad for you xx

Vitamin A you shouldn't take but vitamin D is important, it's hard to absorb and we don't get enough from the sun in the uk. Medical literature and research supports that.

I took multivitamins when ttc and continued until i was about 7 weeks when ms kicked in and they made me throw up every time i took them. So I stopped taking them and never started again.
I've read the NICE guidelines on the subject and im aware of the research which has been carried out, but I am not high risk (healthy diet, spend time outdoors, pale skin, etc) and with the recent improvement in the weather dont really see why I would need an extra supplement.
Also a collegue of mine was recently at a seminar on the subject by a professor who was studying the effects of vitamin D and he was saying that really further research needs to be done into the subject due to the different ways its absorbed by the body and could potentially be harmful to children. I said this to my midwife who admitted she attended the same seminar and that guidelines could potentially change again, as they frequently do with these things.
Obviously we all want to do our best for our lo's, but if im going to be taking supplements i want to know that its 100% justified.

I know not to take vitamin A. But the mw and nutritionist both said not to take a vitamin D supplement aswell. So because I was advised by 2 professionals, I won't be taking any.
It just annoys me that the advice we get depends on who we talk to! X
