Hi all
There seems to be an awful lot of press at the moment around flat head syndrome and indeed, I was already aware of it as my nephew suffered with it. I'm aware that there is quite a noise about alternatives to Moses baskets that would help but wondered if anyone here had experience of them and/ or their own thoughts on the debate.
Thanks

I’ve not had any experience with them (first time mummy) but my mum found a pillow the other day that you can use in a Moses basket and it apparently stops flat head syndrome. Otherwise I did see a hammock type thing that you can attach to a cot bed and they can’t roll over, I don’t know if that would help stop flat head syndrome? https://jaexpressx.com/products/safety-hammock-prevent-sids?variant=7805567893546

Sorry to not be much help answering your question! Xx

Not an expert here but when I had DD I remember being told to make sure she doesn't always lay on her back and to rotate her to her sides for a bit which can help avoid the flat head syndrome. That is what I did and she was fine x Of course every time she was on her side I had to make sure there was no way she could roll onto her front x

Dd slept on her back last time and had no problem with flat head syndrome,we used a moses basket for a short while then a crib. I was just told to make sure she wasn't on her back when awake so used to have her in a sling, bouncer chair or doing tummy time. A lot of her daytime naps she slept snuggled on her front on my chest so was only really the night sleep she was on her back for a long time and it never seemed an issue xx

Thanks all, really helpful as I'm trying not to be over the top with everything I'm reading :)

x

Good advice here already. Pretty much the same as everyone has said. Dd was in her Moses basket, swaddled and always slept on her back at night (still does)

Basically leaving your baby lying down on their back all the time causes flat head syndrome which I think these days is actually hard to do? Dd slept on my chest for daytime naps or cuddles on our chests. With this one I'll be trying a sling too which would be forward facing with their head to the side anyway. I was a little conscious of it but we never had a problem either so I wouldn't worry xx

Slightly off topic. But I have not much experience in babies lol. I was wondering if maybe (when I get a new place) I could use a moses basket downstairs for baby to sleep in and cot upstairs?

But should baby be in moses basket first and not a cot at all? x

It's really your own preference. And baby's. Most like to be cosy. I bought the small swinging cribs instead of a Moses basket. Dd spent almost a week in the hospital cots so hated her swinging crib with a passion. Oh ended up running to Asda to buy " I don't care, any bloody one you see" the 2nd night home lol

But if baby is slightly older when you move then certainly try it if the cot fits in your room. There's no reason why not except the babies preference really xx

As Shan said this could be such hit or miss. With DD we had a swinging crib also and she slept in it OK up until she started teething at 4 months... that's when we started co-sleeping!

This time we are getting a travel cot with raised base for downstairs and we will use the same crib upstairs. There is a good chance I will sleep with the baby downstairs at first, I worry that DD will be kept awake otherwise (our bedrooms all wall to wall and the walls are thin!).

But essentially you don't know what may work best until baby is here x

No reason why you cant have Moses basket for downstairs and coy upstairs just as the previous ladies have said depends on your babys preference! Dd actually hated her Moses basket, she wouldn't sleep in it at all the first month so we used the pram careycot, then she was ok but outgrew it at 10ish weeks so we bought a crib and will be using that straight away this time. I might use dd's old Moses basket for downstairs this time but also might just use the baby box we get free in Scotland xx

I'm wanting the side sleeper for the bedroom and I think I'll get a Moses basket for downstairs. I haven't really though about downstairs sleeping yet lol. We had a bungalow when dd was born

Then have the cot in baby's room for when they're old enough to go into there. Mind you I failed miserably at that when dd was little and she didn't go into her own room until she was ready for a toddler bed! Xx
